It's in my top 5. Its such a well put together film.

It's alright, watching it in today age it does not hold up well, the fight was too slow.

And this is how we got the retardation that was Star Trek Into Darkness.

Wrath of Khan as a slow burn; Kirk and Khan never meet in the movie. There's no grand fight at the end of the movie. Their battle is a battle of wills, a battle of skill. Kirk laughs at the superior intellect. Khan is killed by his own hubris. The movie is not about the final battle. Its about Kirk once again staring death in the face. Spock sacrifices himself, because the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... or the one.

Now you have Into Darkness. There's no way a modern audience can appreciate a movie like Wrath of Khan. So they have a stupid fight on top of a speeding truck, where Spock and Khan kick the shite out of each other. Its all excitement and no soul. It wasn't interesting. I wasn't invested in these characters nor their motivations. Kirk dies, and I really didn't care. He's resurrected and I kind of wished he would have stayed dead.

Nemesis

Is Nemesis that bad? I feel like it gets unfairly picked on because of franchise fatigue.

It was pretty mediocre, maybe the worst of the TNG movies.

Tom Hardy was good. I hated how they killed Data. Left a sour taste.

The first movie was so bad that I wished this on Abrams and Pine.

So, I can only assume your assessment of Into Lameness is probably generous for my tastes.

One of my favorite sci-fi movies. Easily the best in the Star Trek series.

That's the thing. I kind of liked the first one. It wasn't great, but it was a fun little space adventure. Then they tried to shoehorn the greatest of Star Trek movies into that shitty second movie, and they lost me.

I happened to catch the 3rd movie on tv the other day. It was as droll and pointless as I thought it would be.

You got that right.

It could have been, if they hadn't tried to make it "Star Trek" - make it contemporaries to Kirk and Spock, but go with different characters and I might have been okay. Stuck to the original storyline and tried to pick up where they left off - and I might have been okay. But, since it was clearly not "Star Trek" except in form, it really fell flat with me. The need to show all these alternate "origins of" stories, and the superficiality of the characters was jarring. I honestly thought Abrams could do a better job going in, but I was wrong.

Well, we all knew the suits would insist they trot out Khan or Mudd for the second movie - Khan makes more sense precisely because they wanted to glom onto the success of TWOK. It's all about the $$$ at the end. I mean, I'm okay with people trying to make money. It's just that these folks aren't going to make any money off me.

The Wrath of Khan combines the very best of Star Trek - Kirk's unorthodoxy and brilliant leadership, Spock's impeccable logic and analysis, and McCoy's humanity - De and Jimmy were getting pretty old by then, so the only knock is we didn't get quite as much from them as we would have 15 years before, but Montalban's Khan was such a good villain, probably right up there for me with (real) Darth Vader and Gul Dukat, and that makes up for it.

All correct. But what we got was Spock screaming and raging on Khan while they fight on top of a speeding garbage truck. The Enterprise is destroyed, but they've destroyed the Enterprise so many times over the years that it no longer has any impact; they'll just build a new one for the next movie.

Cumberpatch could have been a really good villain on his own, not some horrible attempt to make him something his character clearly wasn't. Not to mention that Cumberpatch was nowhere near as worldly or swarthy as Montalban. Why was this pasty white British guy named Khan? Was it a nickname?

Someone else brought this up point yesterday, and it's very true. But, I remember my jaw dropping when I first saw the Enterprise blowing up and its remains entering the atmosphere of Genesis in TSFS. Thankfully they only destroyed/wrecked the Enterprise once in the original six films.

It started a habit of wrecking the Enterprise for shock value/trivial reasons.

The Enterprise is a character in itself and is (was) the ultimate Redshirt for the series. Losing her in SfS and watching Kirks reaction was almost as heart wrenching as watching Spock die. But eventually like all redshirts the shock of the death just doesn't mean anything after a while.

I didn't like the end of the "D" although I love the "E". Patrick Stewart is a far better actor than a show like Star Trek deserves. Maybe that's the wrong way to put that. Stewart definitely elevated the cast around him especially in big moments like Best of Both Worlds, Chain of Command, and First Contact.

Shatner can be a great actor when he wants to be. He was fantastic in the third act against Kahn, and I still am moved by the eulogy for Spock. "Of all the souls..."
