All his films are essential viewing and he ventured into every major genre and they're considered classics. Who's better?

Kubrick is obviously in the conversation. I think Billy Wilder is also in that conversation. Spielberg, Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola, the Coens, Hitchcock, Lynch and Ridley Scott round out the rest of my top tier.
And I know that ignores greats from the past like DeMille, John Huston, John Ford, Howard Hawks and guys we forget are great directors (at times) like Clint Eastwood.

Here's a question to ask yourself if you want to pick the greatest director of all-time. If you could only watch one director's filmography for the rest of your life, who would you pick? And for me, I keep coming back to one name. It's Alfred Hitchcock. He made so many great films that you could watch all of his films and never get bored.

That's why - for me, that's going to be The Coens, Billy Wilder or, maybe, Ridley Scott - because of the scope of their filmography and the number of films I regard highly being in there.
However, Kubrick would be a great choice for a lot of folks. I get that.

Top 5 but hard to argue he's the greatest with so many in the conversation.

Who's better? John Huston
The Maltese Falcon
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Asphalt Jungle
Moby Dick
The African Queen
The Red Badge of Courage
The Misfits
The Man Who Would Be King
Huston received 15 Oscar nominations as a director, and won twice.

I would pick Fincher, Spielberg, Nolan, or Scorsese.

He is without a doubt the greatest technical filmmaker. The stuff he does is on another level from everyone else. His movies tend to be a bit cold and don't have the rewatchability factor for some people though.

I look forward to certain director's films (Edgar Wright, Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest, Guillermo del Toro...) but with Kubrick it was a huge event.
Similar with Hitchcock, but after Psycho and The Birds, the films were a letdown. I remember seeing Frenzy and Family Plot in the theater and thinking WTF?
