Is Season 3 of True Detective any good?

I loved season 1 and I know a lot of people here think it’s the best season in TV history. I also know everyone here says to skip season 2. I saw season 3 got good reviews but nobody really mentions it on here.

It’s a strong season and has some really excellent moments. The ending just doesn’t do what everyone wanted it to (despite it working well narratively speaking)

Its very good and gets overlooked because Season 1 was excellent and Season 2 was crap. Well worth the watch.

I started watching it a couple of nights ago and burned through three episodes that first night.
The way you younger folks watch TV has me mixing up my days and nights. I'll plan to watch one episode of something and can't quit watching til I can't stay awake. I used to bad mouth you guys for bingeing everything. Now I'm a bingeing fool.
Bingeable TV is giving miniature white chocolate Reese's Cups mixed with miniature white chocolate Kit Kats a race for being my crack.

Liked it a lot. Nothing will ever compare to season 1 though. The only negative I’d say is that the build up didn’t quite deliver at the end. Hated how it ended.

I totally agree with what you just said. Had they nailed that ending it would have been perceived in a much better light. I really didn’t like the second one. It had much potential but there must have been some writers block on that one.

Uh, isn't that exactly how everyone felt about Season 1? Some revisionist history going on here that Season 1 was perfect. Season 1 had its problems too, lets nor forget that.
But yeah Season 2 was not up to par...story was confusing and boring.
Season 3 at least tries to be less cinematically obscure or convoluted to be so edgy.

its ok. Season 2 isn't great, but it isn't AS bad as people make it out to be. The bar was set so high with season 1, it was sort of inevitable that the second season with different characters and locations was destined to fail. Upon a rewatch, it was not as bad as the first go round (still not great). Season 3 is much better than 2 though, but not as good as 1.
