This is where I’m at. I own the directors cut and still pop it in every couple of years.

My MIL gave me the dvd for Christmas the first year it was out. My first thought was, “What the frick am I going to do with this?”

The answer was watch it 3,000 times. And that’s what I did. I love this movie.

Positives:
1. Finale Gunfight is vintage Michael Mann. Highlight of the movie.
2. Some great dialog. The movie is eminently quotable.
3. Terrific cinematography. Just like Los Angeles as the setting for Collateral, you feel like Miami is almost a character in Miami Vice.
4. I really liked the Jose Yero character. John Ortiz is a highly underrated actor.
5. Don Frye cameo (he's the Aryan Brother that Jamie Foxx shoots at close range in the trailer scene)! "The Predator" makes any movie 100x better.

Negatives
1. As some have mentioned, the plot is pretty jumbled.
2. Some under-developed characters. Really wanted to know more about what drives Sonny. You get a little sense that he was weaving some of his real background into the story he was telling Isabella at the bar, but no real development. The main cartel boss was interesting but we basically learned nothing about him. He is in two scenes then literally disappears. Also a waste of John Hawkes at the beginning of the movie.

To be honest, I thought it was okay the first time I watched it but when I recently re-watched it, i'd probably go with "underrated gem"

the cinematography was pretty great. taking a cigar boat to cuba, and that drug kingpins house in the jungle.

Hot take: Don Johnson still looks cool. Not too late to bring him back in a direct Miami Vice sequel as a burned out Sonny Crockett.

Best part of this movie is the Nonpoint cover of In The Air Tonight. Sorry, just not a fan of the movie. It’s really hard to follow.

I mean I like a ton of his movies. Just not this one.

It’s a Michael Mann movie. It had incredible shots, good score and sound design, testosterone inducing shootouts.
Is the TV series Luck (HBO) any good? Don't remember it coming out.

I never saw the Miami Vice movie. If it lands on a streaming service where I have access, I will watch it. Loved the MV series when it aired.

All I remember is it was canceled quickly because the racehorses kept dropping dead.

People who like the series generally dislike the movie, I find.

The problem with the movie is this: despite being stylish, lots of action, and having a somewhat interesting plot, it doesn't surpass the original in any of these metrics. And keep in mind, the original was a then-20 year old network TV series.

Miami Vice the TV show was about Sonny. It had a great cast of supporting characters, primary among them was Tubbs and there were a number of others, like my favorite, Castillo. But the show was about Sonny.

You can say it was a buddy cop show about Sonny and Rico, but after a few episodes in the first season, it really became about Sonny. Rico was Sonny’s partner, which meant he was in the show a lot, but he was still a supporting character. Yes, there were a couple episodes solely about Rico, but there were entire story arcs in which Rico was barely involved. It was Sonny’s show and the story’s narrative was seen primarily through Sonny’s eyes.

Miami Vice the movie was about Rico. Sonny was just a supporting character in the movie. I think that’s why it feels like such different material than the show, because it’s told primarily from Rico’s point of view.

Once I understood that, I enjoyed the movie a lot more.

Just an fyi for some that haven’t seen it or might want to do a rewatch, there’s a director’s cut version out there if you use google.

Also, listening to how the cars sound in this makes me even more hype for his Ferrari film.
