The concept of this movie is so stupid. Redford never had to pay for it in his life, and was turning it away.

One of the dumbest movies ever.
As if a "Billionaire Robert Redford" is going to pay a million dollars to bang some random chick.
Guys like that have beautiful women lining up and begging for it.

You know it was more about him being ABLE to do it than needing to correct?

This. Success and good looks weren't enough. He wanted to flaunt his power.

There's a great anecdote from Mike Nichols, Redford wanted the lead in The Graduate. Nichols told him that no one would believe him in the role. He asked Redford if he'd ever struck out with a girl. Redford replied, "what do you mean?" And Nichols said, "Exactly."

I know right...as is if fictional stories ever deviate from reality......

It was a trashy melodrama... and a pretty flawlessly executed one imo...but I like trashy melodramas

The concept *is* stupid. But it still works, and that's a testament to everyone involved, particularly Adrian Lyne's direction.

Redford's character didn't get off on the sex. He got off on the power and the emasculation of Woody Harrelson. The sex was a tool to destroy the couple- specifically the man.

"I bought you because you said you couldn't be bought." That sums it up basically.

I remember him saying this as a way of letting her off the hook. He knew he could never truly have her heart like Woody did, so he said that as a way of letting her go. I think they both understood it wasn't meant to be cruel.
