I feel like this movie was just as good if not better than any if the other coming of age stories from the 80s. Why do people not talk about it the way they talk about the breakfast club, 16 candles, or fast times?

I think because those movies really captured the time in which they were released (the 80s). And people from that era that really bonded with those movies still talk about them now that they’re in their 40s. They became cultural icons and phenomena.

DPS was released around 1990? but the setting was in the 1950s. So it was more of a period piece. People recognized it as a great movie, but it did not have the resonance of the others in terms of relating to the time in which they find themselves.

No actor in history had a wider gap between their best and their worst IMO. Robin Williams had some real "all time shite" performances, but movies like DPS and GWH showed the dude could act his arse off when the role was right. Both were incredible performances by him and two of the best drama performances of the 80s/90s.

The one time I’ve tried to watch it, i didn’t get far. Made it 15 mins and quit. Just wasn’t in the mood. Not quite my tempo.

Hope you liked it. My favorite movie of all time. I've never been more inspired/moved by a movie.
