In the age of the garbage put on MTV and TLC, what's left that legitimately engages the viewer and possibly teaches them something? Even History is pretty terrible these days (though H2 can still bring it on occasion). Are there any fiction stories out there that present some kind of intellectual challenge?

What are you go-to shows for this kind of thing?

An Idiot Abroad has lots of hidden gems if you actually pay attention. The way Karl sees the world is truly unique. I wouldn't call it challenging, but it can be educational.

I've been migrating to the premium channels for content. i.e. HBO, Showtime and Starz

Big Ban.... Drats!

(not seriously saying it does, but does probably teach more words/scientific concepts than most haters will admit)

On a related note, I really wish they'd air more of those "Earth" type shows on discovery or animal planet.. I miss the old african safari documentary-esque shows.

If you're a literary nerd or anglophile, Archer has some gems.

Archer's humor is half stupid and it's almost funny enough in that aspect.. but it really shines if you catch all the subtle humor in their choice of words

Jeopardy

That and the theme here reminds me of the old joke (notice everything does), can't remember the comedian's name, anyway, he talks about the difference between Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He goes into an announcer voice and says: "Let's welcome Bill! He's our returning Jeopardy champ, he holds multiple PhDs and builds brains in his spare time." Then he says: "Daisy is our returning Wheel of Fortune champ, she is fascinated by small shiny objects." He finishes by saying, Jeopardy makes you feel dumb because of some of the questions. Wheel of Fortune makes you feel dumb, well ..., because you're watching it!

The History Channel used to be so awesome. Tales of the Gun, Dogfight and gratuitous reruns of The World at War.
