I think Thanos already realizes this. When Cap holds back the gauntlet and Thanos makes that look, I think it was the Soul Gem revealing who Steve Rogers really is and that he may be one of the noblest beings Thanos has ever encountered. Much like when Steve moved Thor's hammer because he was worthy. Thanos wasn't surprised by Cap's strength, but his spirit. I believe this may come into play in Avengers 4.

I like it, but as complex as Thanos is shown in this movie, he still wants to murder half the universe to keep it balanced. Even though he has the power to expand it and create more resources instead of wiping them out.

I don't think Cap's "nobility" is going to have that much effect on someone who just committed mass genocide at the highest level.

And if anyone cares, the entire plot leaked for the Avengers 4 from the same source who correctly leaked Infinity War on 4chan.

I don't agree.

He had respect for Stark and sympathy for Scarlet Witch. He spared Tony (keeping his promise), which means the erasure was not totally random. I also think he offer SW to spare her the pain of survival.

Respect is one thing, but it didn't stop him from destroying them all and potentially those he "respected" with the gauntlet. He even told Tony how whereas he did respect him for the fight he put up, he hopes that humanity remembers him after he snaps the gauntlet, basically thinking Tony was going to be part of that eradication.

He didn't spare Tony, he thought he might have been part of the vanishing, he even says it.

I'll never understand the people that willingly read spoilers for a movie that they want to see

I dont usually do major spoilers like that, but I was just intrigued at the ending and wanted to see where they went next since this was supposed to be a 2 part movie anyway.

I actually just found it by typing into google "Avengers 4" just to see if they had a title yet and all the spoilers were on the top of the page.

The internet, it's a dark place.

Doesn't bother me in the least. I can read the entire script and still enjoy the movie.

One thing I've been thinking more about lately is Cap almost picking up Mjolnir. If he was worthy, shouldn't he have been able to pick it up outright like Vision did? I mean, it budges, but he can't fully pick it up. Seems like it should be all or none. When Thor had his power stripped from him he couldn't even budge it, but once he is worthy again he picks it up like usual. Seems off to me.

I think he started moving it and pretended he couldn't pick it up.

Maybe vision could pick it up because he was part of an infinity stone? Idk

This was probably addressed somewhere in this 75 page thread, but what are Thanos’ powers if he doesn’t have the gauntlet? His henchmen were impressive so Thanos must have more than simple brute strength to get such a following.

Demonstrating enormous superhuman strength, speed, stamina, immortality and invulnerability among other qualities, Thanos can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy, and is capable of telekinesis and telepathy.

Plus he's pretty much a genius. "You're not the only one cursed with knowledge."

Thank you sir. I always like to see characters with their own power and not reliant on tools and weapons. That’s why I love Thor much more now than when he was wedded to the hammer.

Man what a great movie!

Thanos was a great big bad! It’s amazing how they were able to show so much pain and emotion on a completely CGI character.

Thor was great. Definitely starting to realize how powerful he actually is and his comedy parts were great. “That’s my new friend, Tree!” Also calling Rocket, Rabbit was awesome.

Really well done movie and sets up the final showdown really well.

I think someone on Reddit had a good theory about why Steve couldn’t lift the hammer completely. During Ultron, Cap and Falcon are still looking for Bucky and have read all of the Winter Soldiers files, which includes all of his assasinations. Bucky wiped out Tony’s Mom and Pops and Cap knows this during Ultron seeing as how he read Bucky’s files at the end of Winter Soldier given to him by Black Widow and has kept it from Tony.

Cap isn’t as pure as he was during The First Avenger, where he likely could have lifted the hammer. Cap’s heart and soul are conflicted (from about the end of the Winter Soldier to the end of Civil War) about whether to tell Tony the truth about his parents and Bucky. That inner conflict kept him from lifting the hammer. I also think his conflict with Tony will play a big part in the next one and then resolving their differences and becoming buddies again will allow Steve to lift the hammer against Thanos, probably in the most badass and heroic moment of any of the movies.

I think he was sandbagging. You can't be "a little pure". By that standard, all the Avengers (the good guys) would be able to lift it. Purity is absolute.

This is the wrong word. Thor isn't "pure" either. It's not a question of purity, it's a question of worthiness.

I'm sticking with the theory that Steve was worthy enough, but his reasons for trying to lift it just then were not.
