Today, sequels come in all manner of flavors. Despite trending in the other direction for most of the ’80s and ’90s, most of the ones made today prefer subtitles to numbers, if only to help obscure the fact that Hollywood is leaning on them harder than ever. Cinematic universes have turned franchises into multi-headed hydras, spawning sequels in several different directions at once; meanwhile, unapologetically cheap horror sequels are still pumped out with such frequency that someone just thought to make a (thrillingly original) film about it. Some sequels provide more of the same, continue an epic story, or riff on an established formula. Others take a more opportunistic approach, building on what came before them in order to subvert expectations and create something all their own.

Aliens is definitely up there for sure, probably top 5 for me. You should definitely watch GFI/II. I know GFIII Gets a bad rap, but it’s worth a watch at least once.

despite being what i would consider a movie aficionado and lover, I was 40 before I saw it and it was excellent and deserves the accolades. Not in my top 10, but a worthy film.
