Stalag 17

Why? Billy Wilder, producer-director. Cool as hell, William Holden. Otto Preminger as the camp general.

Truly a fantastic film if you haven't seen it. Been a personal favorite all my life.

The Thin Red Line....does an amazing job of showing what war does a man, psychologically. Also, it covered one of the most important battles in WW2.

And I'm a huge Malick fan.

Some great ones have been mentioned I am adding The Last of the Mohicans to the list. I know how much this board loves DDL.

This isn't machine gun and army tanks but imdb has it listed as war.

The Thin Red Line - because it was one movie that felt like what war probably and what veterans say it is...a lot of down time/boredom...with intermittent crazy shite you're asked to do...and nobody wants to do it.

The movie captured that perfectly.

It takes place during WWI but I don't think of it as a "War MOvie" - it's a biography and highlights the highlights.
