Saving private Ryan has to be mentioned. What about We Were Soldiers? Great score in that movie.

I think hunt for red October deserves a mention. Can't think of a better Cold War movie offhand.

My favorites would be braveheart, glory, we were soldiers, saving private Ryan

So many to choose.
I am not sure a best applies.

If I had to pick a best - The Longest Day

Close behind
Das Boot
Tora Tora Tora
SPR

Just a few of many.

First half of the movie is great. And pretty realistic. I didn't care for the second half.

Kingdom of Heaven (See Troy)

List is subject to change with the release of World War Z

Apocalypse Now, Patton, Gods and Generals....

One most will not mention: Enemy at the Gates. Loved this one.

And a good Russian made flick: The Admiral.

Offhand, I can think of:

The Bedford Incident
Dr Strangelove
Fail Safe
The Third Man
Seven Days In May
The Manchurian Candidate
Ice Station Zebra

Offhand I can't think of a bigger hack than Clancy. His hackishness knows no bounds.
