He wrote himself into a corner. Too many characters/POV, and I don't think he actually has a plan for how it ends. He let HBO bail him out.

Damn shame that the wealth and fame proceeded the completion of the series. Because the fame ruined his focus.
When you put it that way . . .
I’d take the wealth.

yeah no shite
I don’t get the animosity and vitriol towards Martin. It’s ungrateful at best and not a good look in any way. As though he’s required to produce art because people want more of it…all the while leaving people wanting more is the fricking point.
the story is finished; you don’t have to like it. Let it goooooo

He’s probably already finished it and doesn’t want to release it because of the backlash the show got in its last season. Someone will find both the last two manuscripts complete posthumously after he chokes on a hoagie
Yeah actually finishing it does nothing for him because there's no way to satisfy people with an ending at this point.

Generally when you write a series it’s marketed with the intent that it will eventually be completed and that’s why people read them. He made a shite ton of money with that, what is now clear, lie.
He has also claimed that the ending of the show is not how he’ll end the books. And constantly blames show runners for screwing things up when they get passed what he wrote. As I quoted earlier he also claims he loses control over the content but then also openly says he hasn’t bothered writing episodes for those shows either because it’s not a priority for him.
Folks would feel a lot differently about him if he didn’t hold open contempt for the people (and the series) who have facilitated his lifestyle. And constantly blame everyone else for short comings in the shows that have been produced based on his content. He also refuses to let anyone help him with it (which many successful writers have done) and refuses to let anyone finish it if he dies (and at 77 that’s a real possibility).
He also used to use the excuse that he has too many cons to attend to write because he only writes at home. But he still couldn’t finish during quarantining himself during COVID.
Nah. He deserves all of the heat he gets.

The longer this goes the more I’m convinced the last two seasons and how the show ended were all him.
Now he’s afraid to put it on paper and the whole world to know it.
And now he’s just too separated from the story to finish it right.

Well add to it that he was selling the “I’m months away” since 2016. He literally outlined in his blog how he bullshitted his publishers about when he’d be done.
I don’t believe he has what he claims he has. This is from his live blog in 2016 when he and to announce it wouldn’t be out before S6 of GoT:

Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there's a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. (Those 'no pages done' reports were insane, the usual garbage internet journalism that I have learned to despise). But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still... and that's if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.) Chapters still to write, of course... but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures.

So what's Rothfuss' excuse?
Posted on 1/17/26 at 12:55 pm to weagle1999
He keeps making excuses not to finish it because he doesnt know how to and doesnt want to.
Frick him for screwing the fans that made his famous

I think this is 100% accurate.

I think he gave the show runners broad strokes of where he was planning on going (of course, with a caveat of something might change).
I'd also assume he gave them the hope that he'd be pulling everything together before they got too close to it in the show . . . and yeah, that didn't happen.

I think it's taken so long because he frequently rewrites completed chapters, has writen multiple versions of chapters to see how plotlines shake out, and wants to focus on more fun writing then focusing on what people have been waiting on for YEARS.
And now that it's been simmering for so long and people are so critical of the delay and the show, he likes to avoid it entirely.
I'm just waiting for someone else to finish them after he's gone. That's the best I think his readers can hope for at this point.

I conceded some time ago that Winds will never come out, but I wish Martin would just give the fans some closure. Tell us it’s never happening, enjoy your remaining years, and either release what you have, end the series with Dance, or let another author finish it from your outline. He owes the people that made him rich some finality.

I’m a little more generous: I believe the OUTLINE was all him. But the details and execution were how it failed.
People didn’t complain that Arya killed the Night King, they complained about how.
People didn’t complain that Dany flipped her shite and went full on Aerys, they complained with how out of nowhere the recharacterization hit.
Now he’s in a bind because his intended story was NOT significantly different, and he doesn’t have confidence to execute it sufficiently better to throughly seperate from the train wreck.

Many knew that some people would overreact to those statements. None of that means he's not finishing Winds. I think he will, but I also think he wants to do the easier Dunk and Egg stuff first because it will provide information that he won't have to include in the main series, thus cutting down it's bloated size a bit.
I still enjoy his world as a whole and it still provides a lot of good theorizing and debate, so whatever he finishes is whatever he finishes. I'm not going to stress myself out worrying about the next book.

He’s been talking about being “close” on WoW since 2016.
He’s talked about a She-Wolves of Winterfell installment of Dunk and Egg since 2011. But he allegedly just started writing the additional novellas this last year?
Again, he brings this criticism on himself. Dunk and Egg will likely surpass the three novellas he’s written because he’s not finishing it either.
