The bigger question is why did they paint Jessup as the bad guy?
Because he didn't take responsibility for his decision.

Nah, grunts are smarter than most pogues.
This is dumb. Is your average grunt smarter than your average motor t Marine or warehouseman? Absolutely. Smarter than your average fighter jet mechanic? Unlikely. "POG" encompasses everything from the barely literate to the most complex technical jobs.
But to your point, the modern day infantryman is much more intelligent and capable than your stereotypical "grunt"

Also, re: PFC Downey - almost every single PFC in the Marine Corps does indeed act about like he did. It's less their intelligence and book smarts and more the fact that their entire world has been rearranged and they are still getting their feet back under them. They usually even out by the time they make lance.

James Marshall pretty much always plays dumb. He adds an air of confusion to whatever the script calls for.

Accurate portrayal of the typical Marine?
Yeah. The black guy, the colonel and Keven Bacon were way too smart.
And the Navy people were too heterosexual.

I’m just surprised they didn’t have him eating crayons.

I mean Tom Cruise did get called a **** lol
Really? THAT word is censored on here? Good lord. Rhymes with "Faget", as in a "bundle of logs"

Marines circa mid 90s loved the movie and quoted it nonstop, but always thought Jessup was the protagonist and turned it off after “You’re goddamn right I did!”

Why did they make his character so stupid?
As an army brat I was taught that Marine stood for: "Muscles are required, intelligence not expected."

All I know is Lt Cdr JoAnne Galloway would get a ride on the Hispanic Titanic. Demi looked so good in that movie.

"You see, I can deal with the bullets and the bombs and the blood. I don't want money, and I don't want medals.
What I do want is for you to stand there in that faggoty white uniform and with your Harvard mouth extend me some fricking courtesy."
