I mean that kid seemed borderline 60 IQ. Didn't know crap about anything. Like a baby trying to navigate through the movie.

Always bothered me. Why did they make his character so stupid?

Because people like him have very few options in life. It was either fry cook or Marines.

Which is why his discharge is so devastating for him.

He's just smart enough to be an effective bullet sponge and follow orders.

Not all Marines are that stupid

But especially when talking about grunts...a lot of them are that stupid

I thought it made sense when you factor in that the prosecution’s key piece of evidence has him being a set up as a sucker. Kind of hard to make that case if he’s not a little slow already.

The bigger question is why did they paint Jessup as the bad guy?

I thought it was pretty accurate of most enlisted marines who were seeking discipline in their lives. They wanted a code to follow and to be told to follow it.

They definitely overemphasized what a dumb Marine would act and sound like. As Kirk Lazarus says, "Never go full retard."

The real question is why in hell he would put in the stand and not Dawson?

Came here to post exactly this. Especially since they were begging Weinberg to stick around because he was great at preparing witnesses. The answer, obviously, was to create more drama. A better story. But that would have never happened in real life.

I don't know why Dawson wasn't put on the stand. Downey was because he supposedly heard the Code Red order from Hendricks. But it was later found out that he didn't, because he was on a long run and didn't make it back to hear the order. He just did what everyone else was doing.

ETA: I think Downey wasn't put because of his propensity to be a dick.
