Dark Knight should not be number 1, IMHO.
Then again, I didn't really care for anything int he movie other than Ledgers performance(FWIW, I went into the movie thinking his role would be completely overrated).

1990's put out stuff that just broke ground. Pulp Fiction wasn't original by any means, but think about the average film goer who saw it and became a better movie crtic for it. The same can be said for American Beauty (easy, Jersey Tiger), Natural Born Killers, American History X, KIDS, The Doors, Rush, etc. These films were all, for the most part, acknowledged by the masses and are part of the many films that separate the 90's from the 80's and now the reason why we are seeing very few films in this decade pull off the mainstream appeal when it comes to controversial material.
In my opinion, we are in the age (and an escapeless one at that) of the comic book/superhero/1980's cartoon turned blockbuster special effects films meet the Rogen/McBride/Ferrell comedy meet the next attempt to become Wes Craven. Of the 18 movies usually on the marquis, 2 of them might actually be "stand the test of time" films.

Wall-E was total shite
The only reason dark knight is #1 is because HL died. It was good, but not THAT good

Memento was good and original, but not in my top 10 and I wouldn't think many other film buffs' either. Top 20 for sure.
I'd put in my top ten. I only gave 7 movies this decade 5 stars and that's one of them.

No doubt, this hasn't been the best movie decade.

I would have Departed at #1.
Posted on 8/19/09 at 5:24 pm to MJRuffalo
Departed has too many flaws, imo. 1.) trying to put too much in a movie (that love triangle was so unecessary), 2.) WTF at the "twist" at the end.

while I agree with your argument, that list of films make me believe that ANY decade was better than the 1990s. I think outside of American History X, of which I'm apathetic, I hate every film on your list.
I think we're beginning to see in film and TV what we already have in music, the balkanization of culture. Everyone just aims at their demographic.
To the 2000's credit, I think the quality of the average movie is higher, but I think there is a lack of great films. A lot of blockblusters now at least attempt to have a decent plot and some characters who represent real people (Transformers excepted, but we are in a new golden era of action movies). Last year is a perfect example. It was a very deep year with lots of GOOD movies, but no great ones.
