047. Logan's Run (1976)

So low...because this is what the genre is about.

Logan's Run, had a meaning behind it...an allegory of our century turned post-apocalyptic fable...not necessarily bombs but post-apocalyptic by any means in which the populace could never gain real knowledge nor rebel...resulting in young adults being killed-off willingly mentally or physically for rebirth before they realize they're idiots being conned...and have no chance to figure stuff out. Hiding the truth through media or state manipulation.

Best Sci-fi flicks have always related to present or modern times...whether war or socially dumbing down the people through media or through...comfortable sanctuary...TV, internet, social media, etc.

It's the theory...running through the 60's rebellion...that argument that future young adults will never know the truth through distractions of technology, misdirection nonsense entertainment and manipulation of media or simply being killed off in war...and that's what they give the young people in Logan's Run...more fake rules and nonsense stuff to worry about and follow...

....and they all go willingly living their life superficially, pleasure-seeking...comfortably numb with puerile distractions until their waking death...never questioning anything because questioning takes awareness...of things beyond the bubble of technology safety zone and their personal safety.

So Logan's Run sort of nailed it for now and the next whatever.

Bump, because I saw this last night at movies on the lawn. Really good movie and the guy they got to play the score fricking killed it. Not sure what it would be like with the original music, but it was a pretty impressive movie.

Added bonus, I get to be all snobby about having watched a nearly century old German film. I'm pretty fricking cultured.

Yes. I suppose I can see why someone with such limited exposure to cinema could feel that way. But you have to understand that these lists are made by refined individuals like myself who can appreciate film on levels that your ilk wouldn't understand. But your opinion is duly noted :scoffs:

Such a vulgar and uneducated statement, I'll bet you've never even seen a silent, foreign film. :Scoffs:

I know the author of Logan's Run personally and he would object to this movie even being on any list of "Best Of." He absolutely hates it.

Also hates that Hollywood is mulling around a remake of it with Logan being, surprise surprise, a woman.

I saw the title of this thread and knew at least 2 things were waiting inside: 1) OMFanboy would be on his knees knighting for Nolan being under appreciated--check and 2) He would have devolved this thread into a semantical argument over what is and what is not sci-fy, having appointed himself the absolute arbiter on such matters, being incapable of seeing nuance or shades of gray. No, everything is either black or white. He is absolutely right and anyone who dare challenges even the slightest bit of his opinion is absolutely wrong. Check.

As for my own 2 cents, I have always thought that A.I. would have been a masterpiece if it had ended with Haley-Joel trapped at the bottom of the ocean. But Speilberg had to Speilberg it up. Took it from possibly being top 10 to not being on this list at all. Most films that deal with the dangers of A.I. seem to be warnings of the dangers they could potentially have on us when they become self-aware. But what about the dangers we potentially pose? Think about a self aware being that we created--as creepy as he was--having to spend eternity stuck at the bottom of an ocean. That's terrifying and an interesting take on A.I.

But Gravity had that scene where she emerged from the capsule just like the first land vertebrate emerging from the ocean.

ET and RoboCop are ranked too high, for sure.

Wrath of Khan is somewhat underrated.

Andromeda Strain is way underrated(maybe Omega Man, too).

That may or may not be an interesting take. Have you seen Metropolis or any other 1920's German films?
