Fun fact about that scene: one of the guys on the couch is Jody Hill. He is one of the owners of Rough House Pictures with Danny McBride and David Grodon Greene; he writes/directs/produces for Vice Principals, Righteous Gemstones, etc. He is McBride's friend with long hair in the church band in Gemstones

Oh wow .... nice trivia note, thanks!

How the heck did I not know about this movie until now.

I have no idea, but it is one of the best comedies of the last 15+ years. It's straight up hilarious.

Another fun tidbit...I read a satisfying story on Twitter the other day about Bill Hader and his role in Superbad:
quote:

While on Saturday Night Live in the early aughts, honing impressions and giving life to characters like underground-club-king Stephon and talk show host Vinnie Vedecci, Hader was quietly crafting a film career. He didn’t care if he owned a scene — he just wanted to be part of “something good.” So when he read the part of a ludicrous-but-loveable cop in an upcoming Judd Apatow flick called Superbad, which became Hader’s big-screen breakout moment, he jumped, passing on a bigger part in a projected blockbuster with an underwhelming script. “I got a very snarky email from this agent that said, ‘Let me get this straight: instead of being with this big actor in a lead role for this big amount of money, you want to be with the kid who plays George Michael on Arrested Development for that amount of money — and you’re playing Cop Number Two?’” explains Hader, now 41. “I didn’t respond because, well, it was rude.”

Instead, he waited patiently for months for both movies to hit theatres in 2007. “When Superbad was a massive hit and the other wasn’t, I found the email and I just responded, ‘yes.’”

For whatever reason, I've always laughed at the way that guy says "I've never before seen that in MY LIFE!"

Could be his accent

There were a lot of movies released in 2007 and many of them had big stars. But I'm wondering which ones might have had a part that Hader would have been right playing that still bombed at the box office?

Here's the list for 2007 LINK

How did Mr. Brooks do at the Box Office? I'm thinking maybe Hader might have been decent in the Dane Cook role?

The Assassination of Jesse James maybe? The Garrett Dillahunt role maybe?

One of the minor roles in Smokin Aces maybe?

I mean there were some big movies in 2007 and a few of them had big stars that didn't kill it at the box office but most wouldn't have roles that fit Hader I wouldn't think, especially at that point in his career.

That's actually a pretty interesting theory. I liked Mr. Brooks, but Hader obviously made the smart decision. Haha

The reason I thought Mr Brooks might be the one is because Bruce Evans (Director) seems like he would go after a comedic talent with a broad range like Hader and that role would have been perfect for Hader.

Interesting trivia about Mr. Brooks is that there was/is supposed to be two sequels planned but that's because they have so much leftover script because it was originally pitched as a TV series starring Costner for AMC, FX, HBO but no one bit.

It made money but it wasn't the big hit everyone thought it was going to be.

I'd like to see a sequel to see if the final scene was a dream sequence or not ... and to see the daughter's storyline carried on. Wondering if she has an alter ego imaginary friend as well.

But I could definitely see Hader in the Dane Cook role. He would have been much better than Cook imho.

Hader has some serious chops.

It’s an over the top comedy

But for me what really drives it home is the way Seth Evan and Fogel Talk each other is exactly how HS kids banter and rag on each other

And in between all the crazy events it’s all the little jokes and situations that seem they genuinely could’ve happened to me as a crazy hormone fueled teenager:

- caught staring at a girl in class so now I have to pretend I’m staring into space. He nails it.

- the “bye!” And you end up walking the same direction.

- “its 10:33”

- the quest to get laid and just hyping up the anticipation an outlandish amount and it just never plays out like that

- keeping a running tab of your hookups

- the struggle to buy alcohol ... and all your friends want shitty weird stuff you’d never drink as an adult (Kyles Killer lemonade, the goldschlagger knock off stuff the other girl wants)

- being obsessed with some girl in your class

They REALLY tapped into the vibe of being an adolescent extremely well it really blew my mind. So for such a degenerate movie it just seemed kind of tangible and genuine.

All of this. This movie perfectly captures what being a HS kid as an older millennial was like.

"How old are you?"

"....22?"

"YOU CERTAINLY ARE! THAT'LL BE 80 DOLLARS"

"Oh. Ok"

*pulls out 80 dollar bill from sleeve*

"Cha! Thank you kindly! Will that do?"

"IT CERTAINLY WILL. Thank you Seth!"

"Hey, thank you!"

*double high five*

Interesting continuity error...

There’s a sign at the high school at the very beginning as they’re leaving the gas station heading to school that says 2 weeks until graduation or something similar and yet Jonah Hills’ character says 3 weeks left

Fun Fact 2: Episode 7, you can catch a scene with David Gorden Green "producing" the televised Easter Sunday service.

Michae cera’s subtle mannerisms & delivery is why I love it so much. For example, the scene where Jonah hill and cera are in his room and Jonah is trying to find something to wear, Michael Cera is playing a video game, and his dialogue to himself while he’s playing and getting frustrated makes me lose it every time.
