I remember seeing it for the first time in theatres and Darth Maul showed up and I was like "oh shite. The new Star Wars is going to be awesome!!!" Then they cut him in half and fed us Jar Jar Binks. Biggest catfishing in movie history, Outside of the Crying Game

Hands out to his side in a "wtf???" posture. Never brought his sword up to defend himself.
He looks exactly like you would look if somebody up and did that shite in front of you.
Either Darth Maul was blown away by the force jump, or he got mentally retarded suddenly. So he is either weak in the force, or stupid.

He was perhaps the only Jedi wiser than Yoda because he knew Anakin had to control his emotions, not repress them like the Jedi wanted and not use them for power the way the Sith wanted. Yoda was blinded by arrogance just like the rest of the Jedi but Qui Gon wasn’t that way. It’s entirely plausible Qui Gon sniffs out Palpatine for who he truly is since he without a doubt would still want Anakin but he would have never sought out counsel with Palpatine with Qui Gon in his corner and he would have sensed the darkness lurking beneath Palpatine’s motives to get emergency powers from the senate. Qui Gon might not have been the most powerful with a lightsaber like Yoda, Palpatine and Anakin, but he was without a doubt the wisest and possibly the best version of what Jedi should be and was probably extremely powerful with the Force. We just never got to see him use it because Lucas is an idiot.
Don’t forget, he was the one who taught Yoda and Obi Wan how to become Force Ghosts, which is essentially immortality.

Yep, should've been more screen time, and he should've lasted through all 3 "sequels".
The fight scene with him and the 2 jedis was maybe the best fight scene in all of Star Wars.

Holy shite. I'm a pretty casual Star Wars universe follower/watcher. My son has always loved the villains and legit cried when DM was killed (he was 5). I told him that he wasn't really dead to cheer him up not having any idea that it was actually true.

He isn't underrated. Hell, the better case is he is completely overrated for the short time he is on the screen. And people only love him for his demonic look and lightsaber. That is all we know about him from the movie. So no, he isn't underrated. He is overrated based on the movie.
He might have a more compelling backstory from the cartoon but I never saw that.

They made him overdramatic, whiny, and over talkative in Clone Wars.
Maul as a silent, badass assassin in Phantom Menace was pretty good. They should have stuck with that and then built on it in Clone Wars.
