Just watched this movie again a little while ago. I don't care what anybody says, it is one of the most perfect movies I've ever seen in my life. Every single scene in the movie caught my attention, and JK Simmons performance is one of the best I've seen in a long long time. Miles Teller wasn't bad in it either. Never would have thought playing drums would be intense. It's such a great movie, and I have no complaints about it. Thoughts?

Exactly. I don't know if I've ever seen a film that was so "precise." Every scene and every transition between scenes appeared to be so intentional to driving the plot. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen.

There are two times that I can recall where I thought, "given the genre or topic, this shouldn't be eliciting such visceral emotion." The final performance in Whiplash is one, and Wall-E's "love" for Eve in Wall-E is the other.

These really highlight how powerful a film can be, regardless of the topic.

I love everything except the car crash and crawling out and "making it" to the performance on time.

It's just the only part of the movie that went too far and sort of takes me out of it.

Still a fantastic movie.

That scene is essential though.

It's one of the best movie theater experiences I've had in the last several years I would say, and I go to a lot of movies. Highly recommend it.

It is amazing. Easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. That ending is absolutely epic.

One of my favorite movies. I was sweating in the theater because I was so tensed up.

I noticed that I was sweating a lot by the end of the movie as well.

Its one of the greatest movies I have ever seen and I hate jazz music. Its a simple movie with few characters but tremendous character growth.

If you dont like this movie, then I cant respect your opinion on great films.

If you absolutely hate jazz then I can't respect your opinion on any genre of music.

I appreciate Jazz, just do not understand chord changes that complicated. Whiplash, being around a big band, doesn't get into the more difficult to "get" styles.
In other words, the charts are catchy. That helps.

I love this movie because I went to a music school with an old school Sicilian who was just like Fletcher when teaching improv.
Brutal, and just wanted results.
What is strange is the love that man inspired from
such cruelty. I respected him greatly.

I've watched it 3 times.

I don't know how great it is.

But...well,

If you are on a flight from Boston or NY to London or hopping an Amtrack to wherever...this would easily block out everything else and occupy your time. It's intense and highly rewatchable. And when you are done, it doesn't take long to rewatch it again.

It's sort of like a music Karate Kid...except the teacher is the a-hole and the kid is the good guy...vs. Karate Kid where the kid is the a-hole and teacher is the good guy.

I don't really listen to music so that's fair

I can tolerate any background music with the exception of R&B and Jazz

One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Re-watched a few times and it confirms it.

For a gauge on my tastes, City of God is my favorite movie of all time.
