How far down does the ending of Fury knock the full movie down?

I think it was headed for an 8-8.5 before the battle at the crossroads. Really gritty, great collection of characters, showed how utterly brutal the war was at that point.

The relatively small encounters leading up to the end were great at showing a tank in WW2, the Tiger fight was utterly devoid of logic (love the tank commander saying load anti-tank right after they just shot a tank) but we’ll ignore that and get to the point…

Norman is maybe a mile or two up the road when he spots SS troops marching and SINGING loudly down the road.He sprints back, which even if he runs a 4 minute mile means those troops aren’t but 5-6 minutes behind. Yet, the boys have time for an argument, staging an attack, loading up, and a sentimental conversation before the troops show up.

When Norman first sees them, there are probably 10-15 troops with Panzerfausts on their shoulders, they also break open a couple of crates once the fighting starts, yet it’s not until half of them are slaughtered that they break them out. The krauts set up a line of MP40s and MG42s against a TANK. Also, Norman runs out of ammo and Wardaddy says “we got ammo outside”, why the frick was everything not brought inside the tank?

All it takes is for a couple of krauts to spread out and flank with Panzerfausts and that scoped rifle to take them out. Battle realistically lasts maybe 5-10 mins.

For me it takes the movie down to a 7. I will still watch it when it’s on tv but I want to catch it at the beginning and watch until they take the town. The Tiger fight and ending at the crossroads are just too badly thought out for me. Completely devoid of common sense. The final fight turns it into some Rambo sort of movie instead of a realistic WW2 tank movie, which it was up until that point.

I don't mind that battle as much as the young German soldier, surrounded by the dead bodies of hundreds of his comrades, letting Norman live.

If you consider Fury a war movie, it’s one of the worst war movies ever made. It’s beyond ridiculous, and the ending is outrageously laughable.

If you consider Fury a war satire/comedy, I’d put it around 2 and a 1/2 or 3 out if 5. I saw it at the theater, and laughed out loud many times. I’m still not sure if it was intentionally bad, or the folks who made it were that clueless about history.

That battle scene actually happened. Google Audie Murphy

Murphy mounted the abandoned, burning tank destroyer and began firing its .50 caliber machine gun at the advancing Germans, killing a squad crawling through a ditch towards him.[70] For an hour, Murphy stood on the flaming tank destroyer returning German fire from foot soldiers and advancing tanks, killing or wounding 50 Germans. He sustained a leg wound during his stand, and stopped only after he ran out of ammunition. Murphy rejoined his men, disregarding his own injury, and led them back to repel the Germans. He insisted on remaining with his men while his wounds were treated.[68]

I love the ending. Yeah, they had killed a lot of Germans, probably a little too many, but it wasn’t that unbelievable. Not enough to ruin it for me.

The movie shows how war changes you. Even when Brad Pitt tries to be civilized with the German woman, he can’t because the war and his men (who are affected by the war) are not letting him. The scars on his back remind him that he can’t go back to a pre-war life. He tried to be civilized but the others saw his scars and he realized he will never escape the horrors of the war.

And here comes Norman not yet affected by war and he is now with the guys who are affected and he doesn’t understand it. He’s fighting the battle of keeping his humanity.

They see all their fellow tanks get blown up but they keep following orders. They know they won’t live and that it’s only a matter of time, they are just going through the daily routine and waiting.

Brad Pitt can’t leave Fury saying “this is my home”. He has already accepted his death and does not want to go back to America and try to live normal. The other members fight the reality of death but then realize that death is their fate and they stay with Fury.

Norman represents the crew’s hope. He saw war and had to do bad things but overall, he wasn’t changed too much and was able to go back living life after the war. The crew knew that possibility was gone for them.

My only thing that confused me was that they were supposed to be SS.

I can actually understand the soldier's reaction if he was in the regular army.

The movie took place in April 1945, the Germans surrender by May 1945. By that time they were depleted, demoralized, and the units were filled with soldiers that were too young, too old, conquered foreigners, or probably just didn't want to die for a lost cause.

I couldn't blame some disillusioned kid that was probably pressed into service not really having any real connection to the other Germans around him and having 0 desire to take revenge/starting another scrap at the end.

With all that said, they were supposed to be SS. Someone will have to educate me on this, but even if their best troops were long dead, captured, or in the East, I assume those that still made up its ranks were largely pretty radical and motivated to fight on.

This scene was awful. The tiger would not need to advance towards them as the 88 gun could knock out the Sherman’s from great ranges. 2. The tiger would have knocked fury out first as he was the lead tank and had the 76 mm gun which could pen the tiger frontally. 3 fury did not need to get behind the tiger to knock him out as he had the larger 76 mm as the other Sherman’s were armed with the short 75

The other scene that was unrealistic was the woods clearing scene with infantry. The German anti tank guns continually missed at relatively short range. Those AT guns are incredibly accurate and would have at least knocked out a tank or two. The blowing up of those guns by the Sherman’s was cool though

Also doesn’t it go from daylight to pitch black in a matter of minutes during the final scene?

Well if all of you are going to blast on Fury then you need to blast on Hacksaw Ridge. What a load of shite several of the scenes are in that abomination.

yes it was a terrible nonsensical way the ending was done

quote:

not only that but, the part where they left all the spare ammo outside on the back of the tank as well. i mean holy hell the tank is disabled, and you know you are about to fight to the death with no escape or hope to win, and you leave all the extra ammo you have outside and out of reach to get to it???????????

quote:

All it takes is for a couple of krauts to spread out and flank with Panzerfausts and that scoped rifle to take them out. Battle realistically lasts maybe 5-10 mins.

yes this is exactly what would happen in real life while the rest of those troops would have marched around the side of those fields and continue on their way leaving maybe a dozen guys there to dispatch the one tank blocking the road.

I agree with you about the ending. It’s not that they all died and didn’t make it out, it was more like, “why are the Germans being so dumb?”

Movie sucks. A couple of vets have spoken out that the movie exaggerates the brutality of the time and region, the war was mostly over in the west at that point.
