But early on Robb is also the one that out strategizes and captures the great Jamie Lannister, outmanuevers Tywin, binds most of the fractional northern houses together, makes key strategic alliances with the Frey's, and is winning all of his battles against the Lannisters. He has a hubris about him, but then again so does Rhaenyra. For pretty much all of Game of Thrones(the novel) Robb is like the leveled up version of Ned.
Ned Stark was a primary engine in an army that captured the entire empire. Ned was also very conservative and understood the shaky post he stood on in the north. Robb benefitted from alliances that Ned had gone to great effort to make and that fell apart the second Robb was killed. As for Frey, that's politics. He made a deal with a devil and wasn't savvy enough to understand who he was dealing with. It backfired. Of the children, ironically, only Jon inherited Ned's caution, but he was always the bastard and never the heir.

Right, but the point is that early on in the story, if all you had read was Game of Thrones, Robb comes across very much like Rhaenyra: wise beyond his years both strategically and tactically, able to navigate politics advantageously, and with a confidence and hubris that seems to be working for him....to that point.
I'd argue much more so than Rhaenyra so far TBH. Who's only real moment of exceptionalism has been her confrontation with Daemon. Who it was also clear wasn't actually looking to set of a war at that point, just embarrass and make Viserys look weak.

I guess. My memory at first read was of a confident but obviously young man who leaned heavily on his mother and the Stark house's long time allies.
Honestly, I'm just scanning the thread out of curiosity, not to further the mary sue argument as I've not seen nor have any intention of watching this show. I just found the Robb discussion interesting because I'd never thought of him exactly as an Alexander sort of figure...though I can see where that might have been the perception Martin wanted to create.

I mean Catelyn is part of his early success for sure, but that also spoke to his willingness to listen to good advice and know when to delegate and from whom....at least in GoT. At least initially. Ignoring good advice eventually became part of his downfall as well.
Again, my only point here is that this idea of Rhaenyra as a Mary Sue is both definitionally incorrect based on what we have seen, and that the younger characters coming across, at least initially, as better than their adult counterparts is far from new in Martin's world.

The actresses that play Rhaenyra and Alicent are 22 and 25 respectively in real life and have both been great. I have a feeling we're all gonna look back and wish they didn't replace the actresses mid show.

Criston Cole didn't stutter step. That boi bout it.

Fun fact, the actor who played Jahaerys I is Bib Fortuna from return of the Jedi

I think based on the previews both Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke look like they will be fine, but, I do wonder if it will have ultimately been necessary? If they couldn't have just condensed the timeline and/or used wardrobe, make up, and CGI to both age them down as their younger versions and make them look more mature in their older selves.

I feel like there’s something weird looking about Rhaenyra, she looks kind of downsy or something to me

Has anyone commented on the horrible accent Misaria used? I get she’s foreign but holy frick that was irritating.
Accent is terrible but what exactly should a Myranese accent sound like? I'm assuming she's supposed to be Myranese but she could be from anywhere in Essos I guess. I think the worst is that there is no ambition in her. She doesn't want to claim power. She literally wants to just frick around and be forgotten.

LOL. I thought the same.
Also don't care if her and the brunette turn out to be lesbians. Nothing wrong with some Targaryen scissor action.

So about the King's choice of his next wife, obviously he should have made the correct political choice and went with the Sea Snake's daughter. Is aligning with House Hightower really that bad of a choice though?
He just betrayed his daughter and the richest family in the realm. His daughter and that family both have dragons, so that is a problem. And now all that money and some dragons are teaming with his brother who is plotting against him.
On the other hand you have Otto, with no dragons and less money, though they are rich. King is a good dude, but he’s weak. Good, weak people aren’t meant to be kings.

Why was that particular dragon egg so essential that it made everyone change tune so quickly
Was specifically picked out for the King’s dead baby heir. It just continues the disrespect from the “heir for a day” stuff. Why is the King protecting this dude? At some point you cross a line that being brothers doesn’t mean shite. Shitting on my dead child would be a line crossed. Just another thing meant to show the King has no backbone.

Yea that was really bad, it was distracting. It was a really bad version of Max from Black Sails.

Why do they have to introduce a whore with a terrible accent in this show too?
What the hell was that about? Is that her real accent? If not, what was she going for there? If so, where the hell is she from? Didn’t she speak in the first episode? I don’t remember her sounding like that. This shite stood out on first syllable.

It looks like it's definitely a thing, and it really wasn't in the book.
Unless my memory serves me wrong they had no relationship at all with each other either even as friends in the book, but was created for the season to help make the plot more intense for what was revealed last night.

Velaryons don't have dragons. They have ships. It's why the Targaryans are ruling and not them. Go back and listen to Corlys' speech to Daemon

Yeah, you could tell when they gave the King the news about Daemon, they all expected they were going to war and probably all lost some respect for the King.

She picked that Cole guy partly because she likes him. She has been interested in him since the tournament. Being tight with Alicent doesn’t make her a lesbian.
