Fortunately, this show is headed by GRRM himself, who unlike the hacks writing RoP, actually knows how to craft characters and tell a story.

Based on these first 5 episodes?

The gc editorial is stupid, but people are missing the foundation of the criticism here. This moment with the wedding beating sucked. It didn't suck because the losing end was gay. It sucked because we have no reason to care about either character involved. That was a failure of a setpiece. The time jumps, combined with the show's penchant for summarizing action in a way that makes character motivations curious at best and confounding at worst, have made for a cold and boring first half of the season.

It's also predictable. I haven't read this book, but I bet everyone watching who hasn't read the source material knew the wedding would have an outburst of violence. The fourth episode having the dalliance between uncle and niece was also something we knew would have to be checked off the list. Great. They used the incest as that episode's "How will Daemon get in trouble this week?" segment.

Things like the gc editorial and the avclub episode review mentioned earlier (which was still positive) wouldn't exist if the rest of the show was firing on a few more cylinders.

Especially since he called it GC twice.

Jay Are is never going to have a take grounded in reality just like OML won’t either.

Is what it is.

It’s a show set in a middle age time period. Do these guys not realize that it would be mercy to just be beaten to death if people found out someone was gay in the Middle Ages?

Being beaten to death is about bottom of the list in terms of potential pain for what was a crime back then.

ETA: Here’s an example:

quote:

In thirteenth century France Sodomy resulted in castration on the first offense, dismemberment on the second, and burning on the third. Lesbian ( a term never used in the Middle Ages) behavior was punished with specific mutilations for the first two offenses and burning on the third as well. By the mid-fourteenth century in many cities of Italy, civil laws against Sodomy were common. If a person was found to have committed sodomy, the city's government was entitled to confiscate the offender's property.

[19] By 1533, King Henry VIII had enacted the death penalty for sodomy, which became the basis for many anti-sodomy laws to establish the death penalty The Buggery Act 1533.

Never subscribed but it always seemed to me that GQ was the high end version of Maxim, like playboy was to hustler.

i just meant in political discussions about shows. just like fewer kilometers, perfectly fine poster outside of that.

OML,imjustafatkid, and kaiju don't have to take the bait every time either to lead to those conversations.
