It was a rookie mistake. It's like I totally forgot S1E1 of GoT in the tower at Winterfell.

Honestly, its best to just assume that any given Targ in this time frame is going to marry a Valyrian-blooded relative, if one is available

Jaime and Cersei were certainly siblings, but they had no Targaryen ancestry.

Not every blonde is a Targaryen.

IDK if thats true but it seems like an explanation the show runners would come up with when pressed with why there aren't piles of Dragon shite everywhere.

dragons eat their own dragondroppings.
masks their presence from predators
and allows them to get a second chance to get nutrients they may have not digested the first pass.

because that is not how genetics works. Incest isn’t like getting irradiated by a dirty bomb.

Over multiple, multiple generations, it does have a tendency to enhance negative genetic traits (think of the Hapsburg jawline).

I mean genetics can work pretty much like that.
wouldnt take but a carrier grandparent having offspring, and 2 of those offspring are carriers and procreate then 25% would express the mutation.

or a mutation could be x-linked. theres a famous historical example of this with hemophilia in European lineage.

In very rare instances.

But many people seem to think that when first cousins copulate, you’re going to end up with some sort of post-apocalyptic mutant every time.

I mean you said genetics doesn't work like that but sometimes it do. And can be way before "multiple, multiple generations".
Birth defect rate in first cousins is like 6-7%, more direct is obv higher % although it includes minor heart defects which may be benign and ones that deform appearance/survivability, downs, and a couple others. more direct relative greatly increases those chances, considering even like 4% chance a 'very rare instance' is odd imo. but yes that poster was a little dramatic about it.

plus we've already seen a dwarf in the show so we know there's some genetic mutations floating around.

The search for Aegon also gave us some insight into the type of sadistic things he was into like the child pit fighting that his bastard kids were in. Gives us a glimpse into what type of a ruler he will be and why he is not fit for the crown.
