mean, costner isn't exactly known for being a MAGA hero so surprised they are hating on something he produced.
Glenn Beck reviewed it and loved it. Won't repeat what he said about the beginning as I don't know the rules of the board, but said it wasn't "woke". And a great historical movie. He personally put Costner up with Eastwood and Wayne regarding westerners.

Decided to check out the early showing today because of some unexpected rain. My dad and I were the youngest by far.
It was a good movie, but it’s no Dances with Wolves. I can’t help but feel it would have been better as a limited series. 2.5 hours in and we are still meeting new characters. Even at 3 hours, I felt scenes were missing. That said, it was a beautiful movie to watch and the score was excellent in the tense scenes.
Absolutely hated the way it ends. No spoilers, but it’s basically a “coming this season” montage of what I assume are parts 2-4. Several minutes of out of context scenes showing you what’s going to happen. I skip those for tv shows on purpose, but Kevin tricked me.

Which means, it has a few well developed characters and a longer structure than what our attention deficit disorder generation Z and millenials can put with. Put out by a man who is not necessarily a kind and gentle overtly uber political type in Costner.
Probably let's a story develop.

Costner is not a pussy if that is what you are getting at. He just wants to tell a story....an American story.

Saw Horizon last night and I thought it was great. It did a good job of introducing the story and characters. I feel like it will be very successful and I am looking forward to part 2 next month.

I just got out of the threatre.
It was very good. As another poster here said, not Dances With Wolves. But the sets, costumes, score, and cast are all great. Feels realistic and Costner pulls no punches with the brutality and toughness of the times.

I saw it today. It's kind of a mess. As a stand alone movie, it's not good. Maybe the other chapters will pull it together.

Agree. Enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
Mrs.Vette, not so much...she's a rom-com gal.
That said, I'll stream the rest of it.
People just can't shut the frick up for 3 hours in a movie theater.

agree, it's like a 3 hour trailer. but if they do 4 chapters, it could tie into something really great

Would you consider the movie enjoyable for a squeamish girl? Trying to decide who to see this with.

There are a couple of rough spots, but it's not on the level of Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Ridge as far as graphic violence.

Box office performance is not looking great for the future of parts 3 and 4.
quote:
Kevin Costner independently financed Western Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is posting a $4.3M-$4.6M Friday for a $12M-$13M opening at 3,334 locations for New Line. Whatever this movie cost — some say the first installment is $50M, others $100M — the opening isn’t far from the start of the multihyphenate’s Open Range, which debuted to $14M. We can throw fruit at the opening, but realize this: This is $12M-$13M more in this marketplace, and for exhibition, that’s nothing to complain about. The question is whether the sequel, currently scheduled to be released August 16, 2024, sticks to the landing strip or gets jettisoned to Max. RT score of 71% is better than the 38% that film critics are giving it.

That's too bad. I liked it.
I also don't give much value to Rotten Tomato.

They're gonna make their money on the streaming.
People would rather watch at home so they hit pause and go get snacks and go to the bathroom.
Plus, you don't have to deal with a-aholes in the audience.

I mean he’s going to make some money but after all 4 are filmed it’s going to be 200-250m budget and he might make 150 back.
Doubt he makes money on this but he said he doesn’t care.
Like others said, this would have been a great series

The score, setting, and pace were awesome. Felt like a modern day lonesome dove in that regard
Thought the acting was good too
Having said that, the movie itself as a stand alone move is an absolute mess. But it’s hard to judge something like this as a standalone movie. It really felt more like a television event, once again much like Lonesome Dove

Exactly what I told my wife when we left.
More violent, but the same type of deal...(multiple storyline)

The reviews I saw were upset that part 1 of a planned 4 part series moved too slow.
Like were you somehow caught off guard that there wouldn't be any plot resolution in part 1?

No, b/c I felt like I was reading a book, multiple chapters.
