Hackman and Hopper on the sidelines.

Interesting little bit about Hoosiers.

Everyone thought it was second-rate, thus the original two stars offered the headline turned it down. Jack Nicholson and Robert Duvall. I can't see Robert Duvall bringing anything to the role that would have been an improvement over what Hackman accomplished. What about Nicholson, though? Would Hoosiers have been any better with Coach Norman Dale played by Jack?

Upon reflection, I say no. I'm not saying Hackman is perfection here (he's close), but the edge Jack brings probably would have led to a slightly worse product.

I could actually see Duvall & Nicholson being great as Norman Dale. Which is strange to say because I love Hackman in the role, and it’s always been my favorite sports movie.

Duvall in the Hackman role and Nicholson in the Hopper role.

Would have been cool to see Nicholson take a supporting role.

This movie doesn’t get made today. Hackman was such a damn good actor.

Hackman Was Not A Fan

Wish they didn’t include the love story, if you can call it that, between him and Hershey. It’s cringeworthy.

Think I read somewhere that one of the only kids who didn’t play high school ball was Jimmy. The guy who played Merle sadly killed himself some years back.

There’s a few weird inconsistencies in the movie. Like there were only five kids on the team, then all of a sudden back to six, but if it’s on, I’m watching it every time.

An archetypal sports movie with zero surprises or controversial elements? What about it would keep it from getting made today?

What was deleted: Buddy transferring to another school but refusing to play for a rival he grew up hating, then coming back, sheepishly, to ask Dale for forgiveness and a second chance.

A related scene, also deleted, shows Dale angrily erupting over the transfer, a brief but necessary flash of the temper that first landed the coach in trouble and eventually coaching high school ball at tiny Hickory.

The original cut of the film was 2 hours 48 minutes so there's stuff in the film that no longer makes sense or is awkward like Hackman and Hershey kissing.

I watch this movie every year a day or two before March Madness starts. It's a yearly ritual. This year it will have been two years, so I can't wait.

There is ZERO chance any film in 2021 that includes a ragtag team of working class rural white kids beating a team of inner city black kids gets made. Precisely because we have gone from a culture that values it’s heroic archetypes and what they say about us to a culture that has STRICT culturally- enforced Ideologically predetermined themes. The old archetypes are dead and buried. The script would be completely altered to conform to whatever keeps the cancel culture mob at bay. By the end it would be Clown World Queen Latifah and an all- lesbian , all - black team prevailing over a team of neo- Nazi looking kids who gang- rape Mexican children while wearing Trump hats. I exaggerate and embellish, but you get the picture. Everything now must conform to strict Progressive- friendly, China- friendly standards or it will never get green lit.

The better discussion is now that our old archetypes have been discredited and consigned to the ash bin of history, what do our new archetypes say about us as a culture.

It's a pity your thread with an interesting and original premise has been hijacked with the predictable poli-board stuff, but as to your original question:

I would love to see Duval's take on the Hackman character. He's one of my favorite actors. As great as Hackman was in the role, it would be interesting to see if Duval could explore the darker side / past demons angle a bit more. The one hesitation I have is Duval projects such a forceful personality in most of his roles that I have a hard time seeing any of the parents/school officials/townspeople bucking him much at all.

I really can't see Nicholson in either the Hackman or Dennis Hopper roles. Besides, I thought Hopper nailed that role and it's hard to see anybody improving it.

Gene Hackman is one of the best to ever do it. I love Jack but he’s not at GH’s level.

Hackman had an endearing quality that could make you like him even when he was a bad guy. Superman and The Firm come to mind.

How does the Buddy deleted scene have anything to do with the love angle?

Hackman is a way better actor than either of the other two.
