I think you underestimate the resourcefulness of kids back in the 80's and 90's.
I've actually wandered around midtown NYC with my little sister when we were 12 and 10 b/c we didn't want to go to the Broadway play my parents were going to. We were up and down 5th Ave. Went to the park, checked out FAO Schwartz etc.
