Yeah but they introduced Robin's kids during one episode. It was after the fact that Robin couldn't have kids blah blah blah and made the viewers think they were Barney's kids. But they don't even explain that. Plus That would make Robin like 40+years old and just now having kids....
Things just didn't math up like I expected them to

Pretty much all of this. I understand the creators of this show had this cute plan to end with Ted/Robin from the pilot episode, but I feel like the show had evolved beyond that. They should have nixed their original plan and had Ted live a happy life with the Mother. Sentimental, safe finale would have been a much better route.
Yeah, the whole theme of the show was "How Ted met his wife." They dedicated the entire season to building up to that moment. Then it's rendered meaningless. Not to mention Ted and Tracy don't even get married for 7+ years after meeting. Making that proposal scene in Farhampton seem really pointless now. Remember that scene where Robin floated away symbolizing Ted letting her go? Pointless.
It makes sense though, for every good/brilliant HIMYM episode, there were 3 bad ones. So the odds were never going to be in our favor that they would nail the finale.

Felt bad for Ted when they showed the mother in the hospital. They could have made the ending of the show so much better but for whatever reason forced this garbage
For what it's worth, it alluded to her being sick in the episode where Robin's mom shows up at the end
Mother: "What kind of mother would miss her daughter's wedding?"
Ted: cries, grabs the Mother's hand
Though I don't like how it took forever for Ted and the Mother to get married.

Finished it. Meh.
I don't hate it but I don't understand why they'd go through SO MUCH bullshite with this wedding and everything, only to have Robin and Barney get a divorce and Ted and Robin end up together in the end anyway. It just seems so.....fake I guess.
I agree with whoever it was that said that the mother was an afterthought in this episodes, and that sucks.
I dug the little chat under the umbrella. That shows how perfect they were for each other, but the thing at the end with the kids and Robin...it just felt really forced and awkward to me. I dunno, even though this show has dipped time and time again into the Ted/Robin bucket and it shouldn't surprise me that they did it again, it still kinda did.
Whatever. I'm not pissed at it, just disappointed. I honestly thought they were gonna nail it since this show usually does sentimental really well.
I'm interested in seeing Baloo's take on it. I think Barney growing up because of a daughter was kinda cool.
I do think it's weird that Ted doesn't get the okay from Barnacle to go for Robin. That could've been as easy as a throwaway line.
All in all, it was a sort of weird ending to a solid show. I'll enjoy it in syndication. I'm sure more things will hit me later on, but wanted to get my thoughts down in the thread while it was still fresh in my mind.

You talking about these kids?

They had us invest so much time in Barneys growth only to throw it away.
Having Barney "grow" was the biggest mistake of the show. The only way that they could've pulled it off is if the stripper would've been his redemption. There was no way that Robin being his redemption was going to work. They just ruined two characters by even attempting it.

I didn't see it who is the mother?
Posted on 3/31/14 at 8:48 pm to TheSandman
I was okay with it until we again return to fricking Ted wanting Robin.
It could have ended with a really emotional goodbye to the mother from Ted, basically telling his kids the story at the house after her funeral or something and I would have liked that.
BUT AGAIN WITH THE ROBIN STORYLINE. I know the show was setting up for it to ultimately happen, I just hate it. But for fricks sake they do deserve each other. I do not like either character very much at all
Overall, I didn't hate. Liked everything up to getting back with Robin. Overall, it was an okay ending to a show that was great but overstayed its welcome
still sad to see it go

Those kids weren't real, right? The end of that episode, the unreliable narrator completely pulled the rug out IIRC.

Right. I don't know where this whole "Robin's kids" thing is coming from.
Posted on 3/31/14 at 8:51 pm to TheSandman
Yeah, Robin's kids were never real. That was clearly explained at the end of that episode.

100% agree.
if you want pissed, go to the HIMYM subreddit

I think over time, as it marinates, I'll be happy with it. I just can't right now

I thought the same. I thought surely they couldn't screw it up that bad but when they led off with the Robin speech from Lily and when they showed Ted seeing the Mother on stage so early and it not leading to anything special, you could feel it coming.
The sad thing is that when you watch it in syndication now, you'll basically be watching the story about how Ted meets his dead wife...which will lead to him banging old Robin.

Stopped watching this joke of a show 3 years ago. I win.
Posted on 3/31/14 at 8:57 pm to FairhopeTider
the thing about syndicated shows is that they can be watched individually and still be good without watching them straight through from start to finish. this show does that well.
Posted on 3/31/14 at 8:57 pm to FairhopeTider
quote:Bingo!! The ending actually ruins the whole series in terms of re-watching. It would be the equivalent of the last episode of Friends ending with Ross killing Joey, and chandler sleeping with phoebe. Thus completely undermining the TITLE of the show. (Get it, instead of Friends it becomes Enemies)

I didn't like how quick the kids were to throw their dead mom under the bus so Ted could go smush old crusty Robin.
Sure their mom had been dead for 6 years but I wouldn't ever be a cheerleader to my dad to go bang someone that wasn't my mom.
Plus the kids of all people should have known how much of a pos Robin was and how Ted is only setting himself up for heartbreak once again.

It shows that a women can ruin something but come back years later and get what she wants. Smh.
