Am I incorrect in my assumption that the whole scene with Robin floating away was a metaphor for Ted finally letting her go? Did they just really do a shitty job with that?

I think you were suppose to get that her floating away was the same as when Ted lost his best friend, the balloon, but the balloon joke was bad and the Robin floating away was about as terrible as you can get...

How many more episodes till the finale?

4 more episodes then a 1 hour finale, not on tonight or in a week, got two weeks til the next one and no more reruns after that til the end.

That scene really loses its value when two seconds later after the credits they show them still on the beach reminiscing about their first date and Ted wanting to kiss her then

While I admit the Robin floating away scene was lame, I don't agree that the closing scene does anything more. People CAN be friends after dating and joke about things that happened. Plus it was said in the very first episode that Robin later told him she gave him the sign...tying up loose ends that everyone likes to complain about.

I never said it was unrealistic.

It just completely undermines the last scene and the implication that he really has let her go. It opens the door for Ted to pine over her again in the future before finally settling for the mother.

I think that closing credits scene was suppose to take place prior to the floating away. I think I remember it being pretty much day when she floats away and it's still during sunrise in the closing credits scene. I would have to rewatch it to make sure, but I thought I picked that up during that scene because it bothered me as well.

That's how I took it. It was kind of just a throwaway scene.

Me too. Yes it wasn't done well, but to me at least it was a step forward. Ted had the opportunity of all opportunities to make a move, but didn't.

I've hated the format of this season, but at least they are tying up loose ends.
