Is this one of Clint Eastwood's more underappreciated movies?
It's an absolute guilty viewing pleasure of mine and I usually watch it once a year.

yes.
It would have been much better without MVP (at least, elements of his character). They could have had him being a frickoff slacker without the need for the musician aspirations angle.

I kind of agree, but I never felt like the movie ever had a real serious tone anyway.
BTW, not a chance this movie could get made today.

love the dialog of Eastwood. I keep dissecting all the faults with the movie.
When Highway wakes the platoon the first day it is supposed to be really early yet when they muster it's broad daylight.
The battle scenes on Granada are really poorly done. With all the fighting going on they surprise the Cuban soldiers in the middle of the day sleeping in their barracks?

Same here if not more.
One of my favorites.

Interesting. I've never thought about this movie being the origin of that.

Might not be the origin but it's where I heard it.

Improvise, Adapt and Overcome. Use that quite a bit

Well, I'll sleep better at night knowing that.

A couple of months ago, I saw a Homelight commercial, and thought I recognize that dude from something...turns out it is Swede.

He's also Nick, the Santa car hauler driver in the new Ford commercials.

Without MVP, who would have said “Welcome to Fantasy Disco!” in one of the early bar scenes?
I use the phrase more often than I should. Assuming I heard it correctly all those years ago…

Recon kicks butt!!!
Completely inaccurate movie from top to bottom but still a fun watch and Clint in all his glory.

I have not been as disappointed in a movie as I was in Heartbreak Ridge. Being in the Marines at the time, I was pumped. Clint? As a Marine? Sign me up.
Then I saw it. What a clunker. Just couldn't get past the cartoony nature of it. Just garbage.

It's like watching Silence of the Lambs knowing how the FBI operates

I wonder if that's because it came out after Gunnery Sargeant Hartman, so you thought it would be more realistic? I never got the feeling it was a serious movie at all.

Judge Zane: T Sergeant Highway, drunk and disorderly. Fighting in a public establishment. Urinating on a police vehicle?
Highway: Well, it seemed like the thing to do, sir.
