Yes, but Breitbart wasn't in their feelings about "woke culture" so there wasnt a bunch of manufactured outrage over a writer's work that has always incorporated an element of "smash the patriarchy" storytelling.
And it would be basically impossible to tell this story of Martin's without those themes. As it is literally the story of a Civil War started by a family member over a woman potentially taking a throne historically reserved for men.

Yara literally got laughed at during Kingnsmoot because she was a woman, nobody took Brienne seriously as a fighter because she was a woman, Sansa was used as basically a marriage tool to hold the North, Dany faced major pushback for being a woman, it’s pretty amazing how people want to ignore the fact these themes existed in the GoT as well. Tywin literally told Cersei dozens of times that she’s a woman and should do as she’s told.
