Has there ever been a movie that was just as good as the book?

I've read several comments about "American Sniper" and "Unbroken" that the movies weren't nearly as good as the book. It made me wonder if there has ever been a movie that was as good or better than the book.

Gone Girl is close. Same writer though. She consolidated scenes very well. And even added some nice details.

The fellowship of the ring is better than the book. The other two books are better though...ALOT better

Hoop Dreams?
Kind of a dumb comparison cause the book came after the movie.

Stand by Me and Shawshank Redemption come from the same short story novella, Different Seasons. While both good on paper, the movies were better.

Donnie Brasco, Cape Fear, Full Metal Jacket, Drive, Mystic River, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (foreign version), Silence of the Lambs, No Country for Old Men, and Fight Club
I read some books after I saw the movies and saw some movies after I read the books. But these are the ones that always come to mind (Stand by Me as well I think).

Book nerds always say this no matter what. Some people just like the process of reading more than watching a movie. The books have the advantage of having more detail and take more of an investment than sitting down for 2 hours and watching.

Jaws. Movie was better than the book.

I think the Game of Thrones show is way better than the books.

Agree on shawshank. But maybe I have too fond of memories of the body to think stand by me is better. It was one of the first books I really loved and it got me into reading more.

No way. I think the show is good, and maybe in some parts of the story is better, but the book series overall story is better.

I enjoyed it too. I think the casting for Stand By Me puts it over the top. But it isn't by much at all. It seems like sans a few exceptions that King books have translated well from the paper to the movie screen/TV.

Godfather was better than the book.
The first Hunger Games movie was better than the book, though that is not saying much as both were not enjoyable.
Many think the second Hunger Games movie is better than the book, but I hated both so much that I can't pick a "better" one.
I read the novelization of Star Wars episode 3 and the movie was better, but that may not count since the movie came first.
