I was a “featured extra” (#humblebrag) on the movie Wedding Crashers w/Vince Vaughn & the Wilson brother w/the hook nose…. I was one of Vince’s groomsman in one of the wedding scenes.. Was a fun couple of weeks , but the main thing i remember about that shoot is being at craft services one day when we all found out that Pat Tillman, the Army Ranger/NFL player, was killed in action.. everyone was kind of in a funk after that .

On Golden Pond is the type of movie that your parents and grandparents went to see in the other theater while I went to see Empire Strikes Back or Raiders of the Lost Ark. The 80's. Greatest Decade Ever.

Saw it when I was like 7 or 8 when it was in HBO back in the 80's. Only thing I remember is being creeped out by Henry Fonda saying "you wanna suck face?"

Oh and Katherine Hepburn "you old poo" line.

On Golden Pond is one of those movies from the very early 80s that i always associate w/other films like Ordinary People , which seemed to be HUGE deals back then, won all the awards, but i was too young to appreciate or understand them.. i tried watching Ordinary People in recent years and it seemed extremely slow moving and maudlin, for lack of a better term.. i have a feeling On Golden Pond would be dated and kind of similar, but maybe I’ll give it a watch .

Both On Golden Pond and Ordinary People are classics. OGP was Henry Fonda's best performance and what I consider to be Katharine Hepbourn's second best, with her finest being The Lion in Winter, opposite another screen legend, Peter O"Toole.

Mary Tyler Moore should've received an Oscar for her portrayal of Timothy Hutton's cold, unloving mother in Ordinary People. I don't think I've ever seen an actor or actress play against type so well. She was never able to forgive her youngest son for surviving the accident, even though it's clear in the flashback that her older son sacrificed himself to save his little brother.

Interesting take. I always believed that the younger boy possessed the greater inner strength. The older, more athletic, popular son was just not what they believed, not gifted with that drive to survive (win). I felt like one of the reasons his parents were distant from him is that they were forced to face the fact they had misjudged the 2 boys.

But, of course you are right, she was really powerful in the movie. I think it was Redford's directorial debut?

During one of his therapy sessions, the younger son tells the psychiatrist that his brother let go of his hand. During the flashback, the boat is sinking and cannot stay afloat with both boys on it. I can’t recall if the older brother says anything before he lets go, but in the novel it’s clear that he did it on purpose.

I remember the scene in the back yard where MTM and Hutton are talking and it’s clear that both want so badly to connect with the other, but they just can’t. He brings up his brother and she shuts down immediately.

Yes, it was Robert Redford’s directorial debut and he won an Academy Award for it.

Hepburn and Henry had never met before filming. She gave Henry one of Spencer Tracey's hats, which he wore in the movie.

I didn't know this. Hard to believe at that stage in their lives they'd never met.

What a great movie! I've seen it many times.

Ordinary People was a tough one. MTM was outstanding in her role. It was a great movie, but I could only watch it once.

the Wilson brother w/the hook nose
I talked to him one day in the Sonny Bryant's BBQ on Lovers Ln in Dallas. Didn't notice who it was until he responded to what I said.

I was waiting for a to go order of a chopped brisket sandwich and onion rings, when a Maserati pulled up. After a guy who looked to be in his 60's got out of it I made the comment, "Figures an old guy like that drives that car."

Then I heard Owen Wilson say, "Yea, I'm not surprised to see an older guy driving one of those."

This was 20 years ago when I was in my 40's. I had noticed there was a younger guy with shaggy blond hair sitting by himself eating. When I saw the old guy get out of the car, I made the comment thinking it was just another younger guy that would feel like I did. As soon as he talked, I knew who he was, and also knew he could have driven up in the same car. I literally looked to see if there was another Maserati, or a Lamborghini in the parking lot.

As the thought of how stupid my comment was to him was going thru my head, they called my name. I got my food and took off before I had another opportunity to be an idiot.
