I heard S1 was an abomination so don't want to really waste my time. Will I miss anything if I start with the second season?

Don’t listen to nerds who played the game and are snobs about it.
Season 1 wasn’t great, but it’s still enjoyable and yeah you need to be familiar with what happened to understand what’s going on in season 2.

There is necessary set up and some cool actions sequences sprinkled in. You can probably fast forward any Kwan (Asian girl) scenes after the first episode though.

If you find it unbearable, at least watch the last episode or 2 of season 1.

Yes. Start with season 1. It's not bad. Season 2 has been better.

I watched the first couple of episodes of season 1 just to get a feel of where it was going and then skipped to the last episode. Started season 2 and didn't feel lost. So far it's not bad, but not great which seems to be the going theme for a majority of the stuff released over the last 4-5 years. You get a one off every now and then, but not much.

S1 just wasn't faithful to the source material and showed his arse for no apparent reason. I would tell you to watch the first one so you can follow a few things

Season 2 is some of the worst television I’ve seen in a minute.

Also master chief is in his suit a handful of times the first two episodes. Then he’s no longer in it. Don’t waste your time.

It seems to be a decent SF series with some action, and very good production standards (things don't look cheap).

As I understand, it doesn't appear to follow the game storyline very closely. Maybe the overall concept, but not the story mapped out by the games, and not the books to a large extent.

See this as an example. My son played the games and he gets pissed about things like this, and some other things. I didn't play them (at that point I was mostly playing NCAA Football on the Playstation), so I don't get bothered by this, and it doesn't seem to affect the story.

What my son has explained, they are taking the overall world concept of HALO, with the big picture background basically intact, but telling a different story. If you can accept that, it's not bad.

Watch Season 1. You'll probably end up binge watching it anyway. That will give you more episodes of Season 2 to binge when you've finished Season 1. I'm hating having to wait for the next episode. I really would rather watch two at a time.

I never played the game and was just looking for some good sci-fi. Season 1 is entertaining, and you'll need it to understand Season 2. The show is a little bit like the 1st Jason Bourne movie because the main character finds out more and more about his past as the episodes pile up. You'll need Season 1 to know who the good people and bad people are, but as the series has progressed some that you might have thought of as "good" may really be "bad", and vice versa.

I've been impressed by how well developed the characters are. You have empathy for some of them when they meet their demise.
