Robert De Niro for his past work: Raging Bull, Mean Streets, Taxi Cab, King of Comedy, The Godfather II, Casino, Goodfellas, Heat, Brazil etc...

Best right now and under age 50:

McConaughey
Phoenix
Gyllenhaal
Hardy
Fassbender

Phoenix in The Master might be the best, most convincing acting job I've seen.

I have to say it's Robert Duvall.

Duvall is incredible and is as talented as anyone else in the business. However, he's always the supporting actor. Rarely is he the one carrying the movie by himself in a lead actor role.

Deniro, Duvall, Nicholson are all guys that are playing themselves at this point. Not to say they aren't masters.

Same with Pacino and Denzel.

For his role in...???

Nightcrawler was ok...other than that I'm at a loss.

Phoenix should be up there, I agree wholeheartedly

Travolta is pretty good. The range from hunky guy role like Grease and look whos talking, Tough guy roles like pulp, get shorty and Be Cool, to more action like face off, sword fish, Battlefield Earth, From Paris, to a few roles like Michael. Def got some chops.

ETA:: Phenomenon was the one like michael i was thinking of but couldnt remember

Surprisingly I really liked him as the bad guy in Taking of Pelham 1 2 3.

Prisoners, Zodiac, Enemy, Brokeback Mountain, Source Code....he was great in all of those. Not to mention Jarhead, End of Watch, and Donnie Darko. He is one of the best lead men right now IMO. Something about his screen presence, he has a certain charm that comes through in all of his roles. Almost like Jimmy Stewart.

Really? Donnie Darko and maybe October Sky. He's pretty much a drag on most movies and I like him as an actor. Fassbender, Mcavoy, Hanks, Pacino, Hopkins, Hackman,Denzel, Bale, Daniel Day Lewis, Duvall, Michael Caine, O'Toole, Mcconaughey etc etc are better

DDL is actually to be really chill guy who walks down the side of the to his favorite and puts back pints like any other dude. Yeah the hell with all that pretentious acting, which is hilariously redundant. I love Duvall but when has he not played Robert Duvall. He's great to watch bc he's just enjoyable on screen. Christian Bale is a great pick, I'd through Russell Crowe in the mix too. Watching Crowe and Bale go back in forth in 3:10 to Yuma was fricking masterful acting

He has a long body of work playing a lot of very different characters. He's of course far more recognizable now, but that doesn't mean he is always or always has just "played himself."

Bale has a case for being the best actor alive. The guy can play almost any role.

Random list. And Fassbender, Mcavoy, McConaughey, and Bale are the only ones you listed under 50. Gyllenhaal younger than all of them.
