Comedians become comedy actors often, and they work well in those roles. That's not the same as being a comedic actor. That's a different skillset, and a more artistic and difficult one. No matter how many come and go, Peter Sellers still reigns king. He took on so many different characters and nailed them all. Bill Murray is a distant second in my book, even with his current rise as a pop culture icon. Again he killed it in many different types of roles.

My list:

Peter Sellers
Bill Murray

the rest in no particular order:

Tom Hanks
Robin Williams
Lily Tomlin
Katherine Hepburn
Steve Martin

What else you got?

Will Ferrell in the 00s era of comedies. I felt like every movie he was in he was just a scene stealer. He had me in stitches regularly.

Jackie Gleason is my underrated pick here.

Classic pick is Cary Grant. Guy's timing and delivery was perfect.

Supporting pick is Jack Lemmon.

Physical comedian: Classic is Buster Keaton.
Physical comedian: Modern is Chevy Chase

Utility guy is Bill Murray

Oscar Madison is my all-time favorite comedy performance by an actor...as brilliant as he was in The Fortune Cookie.

Not sure how anyone could downvote this list. Must've been an accident

It’s a good list. They’re just haters.

Chris Farley is rolling in his grave reading this list without him being at the forefront.

Many posters across TD hate him but I think Jamie Foxx is rather underrated as an actor.

William Powell of The Thin Man series.

But his best performance (IMO) was in Mister Roberts.

My favorite.

Also love Clark Gable.

Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot was amazing.
