This is on my viewing menu tonight. I’ve always heard about it but I’ve never seen it.
Is it really as devastating as I’ve been told it is?

It’s the greatest movie I never want to watch again. Once is enough, but it’s a must see.
Fun Fact: This movie was originally a double feature. It followed one of the most joyful movies of all time “My Neighbor Totoro”. That is so fricked up on so many levels.

I think it is one of the first animes to kinda of go against the grain and tell a realistic story
Most animes while great love to adopt imagination, magic, fantasy, and/or futuristic themes whereas this one just dives face first into a reality that is far too relatable for many because of that it is a tougher watch for many because it doesnt always feel like an animated movie

This.
I put it on the same list as Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

I get tired of the "woe is us" movies from Japan dealing with how bad they had it in a war they fricking started. When they make an anime that revolves around the Rape of Nanking, comfort wives, Unit 731, or the Bataan Death March, then maybe I'll watch.

I can still feel bad for children starving to death that had nothing to do with that. Like the movie the Breadwinner is brutally honest on how evil the Taliban was, but it paints the women sympathetically and their biggest victims.

You can lump it into the same category as Schindler's List; a must-watch movie that you will only want to see once.
