I always thought that GRRM should have upped the number i
of unsullied. 8,000 isn't much relative to the armies in Westeros. Only Stannis commands fewer than that and most of the the other armies are 20,000+ strong.

Theon/ Ramsey scene

Just a general reply -

i thought someone nailed it earlier in this thread...asking where the dogs were...In the books, Theon always referred to them as his "Ramsey's bitches"

Voila.

Also, I think Martin extended another clarification tonight from the books, this one about Theon's...alterations. Lots of readers missed the penectomy- there were lots of heated debates about it back then...I always thought it was obvious, but could never locate the smoking gun in the text.

I still remember one of my "ASoIaF limerick" entries, back when Theon was a four letter word:

Ramsey Snow: a psychotic robot;
The torture, Theon couldn't stop it,
"M'Lord," he did shriek,
"If you please-call me Reek,"
"Though a more apt name
Might be...John Bobbit."

Disagree. I think it was to further reinforce how many Unsullied there are and how disciplined they are. Although we saw her destroy Astapor, the rest of the GoT universe has only heard rumors of what Dany is doing. I feel like the scene was to show the liaison that the rumors are true and that she is here to frick shite up.

Agreed, I thought that was outstanding, it showed how subtle Dany was with intimidation all around the Yunkai guy everywhere between the huge line of Unsullied to the dragons.

This wasn't an action packed episode, but it was a great builder episode with lots of little things.

I don't really get the hate for the Theon scene. It continued to show how twisted and evil Ramsay is, and the continued warping of Theon's world.I thought Ramsay's two bitches was an excellent good cop evil cop setup. Given how sex oriented Theon is in the series with the fishwife and then his sister, it was a fitting scene.

It also showed a necessary scene in the show that's only alluded to in the books (Theon's castration). It's not like they are able to have Theon monologue to himself about being castrated in the show like Martin does in ADWD, they actually have to show it. And that's a key part of ADWD with Theon not being able to have kids and his sister trying to put him up for the kingship.

It's in couple parts, at one point he thinks how he is no longer a man, and when the one wildling chick is trying to seduce him at the wedding he thinks about how he's not able to anymore. And then when Ramsay asks Theon to service his wife and get her ready for him, he's stunned and says that he can't, until Ramsay says to do it with his tongue. The part with Ramsay is the clincher in the books really.

It's still vague whether it was a castration only or he was cut "root and stem". Somewhere something more is mentioned, and I was like, "oh shite. Dude pulled a Lorena on him, too"

It was Ramsay we are talking about here, I just assumed he would flay Theon's dick and force Theon to beg Ramsay to chop it off.

That.
Was.
It.

I forgot it was implied, no wonder I couldn't remember where in the text I'd read it. Holy shite. What a cool feeling when that mental itch gets scratched at last!

You'd be surprised on how many readers this clue was lost. Even I lost it again.

Eta: ...Even I (after finding it) lost it again.
Is what I meant.

Yeah that was the part that always sealed it for me quite how twisted and brilliant a torturer Ramsay was, so I never forgot about it.

To me the torture isn't what completely broke Theon, it was the giving of hope and then destroying it over and over (like with the fake escape attempts), and the forcing Theon to choose to have things cut off, making Theon himself a partner in the torture.

I think the whole comforting and sexing of Theon followed by the most fearsome torture a guy can receive in tonight's episode fits in perfectly with the destruction of Theon's sense of self.

So, you're saying they did away with the dogs and replaced this girls as the "bitches"? Because in the books I'm pretty sure they were actual dogs.

It's kind of like the show is shying away from the use of animals, either real or CGI. The Wolves have pretty much completely disappeared and Ramsey's dogs have never shown up (yet). Maybe they are afraid of PETA or something.

We did get the bear though. It felt a little rushed but I thought the actual bear/Brienne/Jamie part was pretty well done.

Back to Theon/Ramsey. It kind of makes me think there will be maybe a little more to Theon's story in both the books and the show. In the books the torture was always pretty much just a meaningless show of Ramsey's insanity. But I think the show may have gone that one step farther. It's been ultra gratuitous. Unless of course it leads to something in the long run.

They could have established that with a quicker scene, IMO

It was a small thing, but that scene just seemed entirely too long

i believe they were just showing that the leaders of Yunkai are actually very intimated by Dany's army even though there are many more people in Yunkai

but yea, it certainly took up some time

I also didn't like Orell the Warg being all jealous of Ygritte and Jon. I can't remember the wildling men in the books calling women "beautiful" or being jealous.

they didn't but the variations from the books don't bother me. i like that we're getting a slightly different story. the only thing i don't like is the lack of backstory on the show

they generally don't bother me either, but the tone of this episode was just too whiny to me.

it was the weakest of the season, IMO

hopefully the next 3 live up to expectations

has it been confirmed that the PW will be in the season finale?

PW hasn't shown up in the episode description for episode 10. Some viewers think it may not happen until episode 2 of season 4 because the Martells won't appear until episode 1 next season.
