Robb's plan was to turn Theon's own men against him by offering them mercy in exchange for bringing Theon back alive
that makes sense as to why Torturer was allowed in the flaying sessions

So the Bastard breaks Theon out from the iron borns, kills 3 of them and takes Theon back to the same place? Were those the only 3 iron borns there. If not wouldn't the other ones be pissed?
The 1st escape from the dungeon was just a well-orchestrated ruse.
Once Theon "escapes via horse", Bastard goes back to the Ironborns and tells them to go capture Theon (Theon and Bastard were alone during the dungeon escape scene, so the soldiers have no fricking clue). Theon is brought down by Ironborns, and Bastard shows up and arrows everyone, making Theon believe Bastard saved him again. Now that trust is earned, Theon admits that he fricked up by betraying the Starks, etc.
Once Bastard brings Theon back, he tells the rest of the Ironborns that Theon killed the other soldiers, and Theon is once again on the X.
Bastard is a helluva bastard.

Do we know they were ironborns? If so, why would the captor tell theon that he was working with his sister who is at the top of the ironborn hierarchy and could just take him if she was going to help?
I thought that whoever had Theon were not from the Iron Islands.

I'll have to rewatch Season 2 for confirmation, but I assume that's the case. The fact that Robb orders Bolton to have his bastard son make a deal with the Ironborns (mercy granted for Theon alive), it seems to makes sense.
But maybe they are Boltons dressed up as Ironborns due to Bastard's elaborate ruse

Are episode recaps frowned upon here? I just read some about Theon and wondered if I could post info fromt them...

Winteriscoming.net has great nonreader recaps for you Hodors. They call them the newbie recap, or recaps for the unsullied.

New topic: In the earlier seasons, Joffrey tells Cersei that he's heard "disgusting rumors" about her and Jaime. We also know Joffrey must have heard the rumors about Robert's philandering in order to search out and kill the bastards. Always wondered who Joffrey was getting his information from, since he apparently has no friends and most people only deal with him when they have to.
Sunday night, Littlefinger brags about helping his "friend," by giving him Ros to kill. So, is it safe to assume that Littlefinger is the "grown up" who's been informing and plotting with Joffrey since he took the throne?

Makes sense. Littlefinger is a slick bastard.

I'd go with that. Littlefinger along with Maester Pycelle was Cersei's source for info. Varys served the realm and order, so he would probably give info to whomever he thought needed it and would use it best.

It does seem to promote the sort of Littlefinger has admitted to liking for the potential it presents for personal advancement. I don't think we can conclusively say as of yet, but it's certainly a valid theory that makes a lot of sense.

I agree to some extent. I know Joffrey knows the rumors about the incest but do we know that he was specifically the one who ordered the hunting of the bastards? I always figured cersei or tywin for that.

No, you're right, I don't think we know that for sure. We do know that the hunting of the bastards was carried out by the City Watch, who - like the Kings Guard - take orders from the King or possibly the Queen Regent (Cersei). Maybe the Hand, but Tyrion was the Hand at the time and we know he didn't do it.
I'd have to re-watch the scene where Tyrion confronted the Captain of the City Watch and fired him, but I don't think it was ever certain and I'm just conjecturing. Seems clear after Sunday night that it was Joffrey who gave the order to kill Tyrion, so maybe I'm just assuming that he also gave the order to kill the bastards since it was a clumsy use of brute force and Cersei is more cunning.
Up til now, I had assumed that Cersei and Joffrey were acting in unison in giving these orders, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore.
I've watched most of the first 2 seasons more than once but there are still details I've missed or forgotten.

I agree. I think the moment Joffrey chopped off Ned's head, he was done listening to his mother. The King thing has gone to his head and the only person who can possible cut him down to size now is Tywin...well Margery might be able to influence him, but she's not gonna tell him what to do like Tywin says he will.

An episode or two after the massacre, Tyrion is talking to Cersei, and blames her for the order. She doesn't verbally admit it, but she lets him know that Joffrey gave the order...it's very similar to the scene where she admits that Joffrey gave the order to Ser Mandon to have Tyrion killed in the battle. It's the first time they realize they're going to have no control over him

I think it is the exact same. Silence is the confirmation Tyrion needs.
