5 - Really enjoyed it. But didn't advance many of the character enough.

Probably a spoiler about book 5 so if you haven't read it move on ....

I found 5 to be as tedious as 4. The thing is 1,040 pages, almost as long as the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy but almost nothing of consequence happens. Lots of pointless pages (especially with Tyrion). I loved the first three books but am getting seriously pissed off with George R.R. Martin. At the pace he is going there is zero chance of him finishing the story in his lifetime. And if he keeps writing tedious books I don't really care whether he finishes or not.

Didn't the first three books come out in like three or four years?

Then he takes five years for the fourth book, and almost six more for the fifth.

So his best three books he cranked out (as he had the story planned as a trilogy) but it worries me to see that his weakest two, took so long to write and advanced the story little.

I also wonder, how he planned to originally end the trilogy?

Crazy, we all have over 5,0000 pages dedicated to this story, and we still don't know where it is going.
I will go insane if he dies without finishing.

My favorite author Harry Turtledove, cranks out like two or three books a year, and Stephen King seems to get in four or five.

Come on GRRM.

I don't understand the hate for AFFC. Cersei and Jamie's povs are pretty good.

For the majority of the book yes. The beginning and end had some great moments, but about 75% just dragged. Bran's POV's got really cool, then he quit writing him halfway through the book. I was severely disappointed with Arya's POV's, something I never expected. Tyrion's had some high points, but was mainly a travel logue. I hate Dany's POV's. He needs to redeem her character in the worst way. Everything else was on point for me.

Dany is awful past ACOK. Martin intends for us to care about Mereen or Yunkai or whatever but it's damn near impossible when everything interesting is happpening in Westeros.

This, and every time she is offered Ships or a way to get to Westeros she passes on it for her "people".

What does she plan to do for them in Westeros?

Sometimes I wonder is she is even getting to Westeros, or is she just another pretty character, waiting to be killed off in an untimely fashion..

Said perfectly. I literally want her to leave every single one of her "children", pack up her dragons and warriors (Barristan and Strong Belwas being a must), and haul arse to Westeros. Tyrion can jump on the ship with her. Daario can come too. I want somebody to kill him for some reason.

ASOS
ACOK
AGOT
ADWD
AFFC

Would be my order. I'm kinda baffled by the love for ADWD in this thread by some. It's not that much better than AFFC.

I'm failing to see how Dany is awful in ASOS, that's pretty much her best parts in the entire series. Now in ADWD, she is flat out terrible.

ACOK = Dany " I need to find shelter, and then take care of my people, then get an army"

ASOS = Dany "ok, I have an Army, but I am going to sit here and practice ruling for a while"

AFFC = Dany "ok, I'm not in this book, but I'm still sitting here, with my Army wishing I had a ship"

ADWD = Dany "Okay, I have an Army, but people want me to leave Meereen, even offering me Ships, but I'd rather wait here and marry this a-hole so that we can save some slaves.."

aFFC gets a lot more hate than it should IMO. Sure there wasn't massive armies going at it or any really huge events happening, but it was some of the best character development I have ever read. We also got to see things from alot of different perspectives that we've never seen before. While not as good as aSoS, it is still an excellent book.

Oh shite! I was hoping he had some clue where the story is headed. Book 4 is really dragging.

Exactly. Granted, I'm only on book 4 but exact who is the villian? I really hope the author draws a line in the sand and commit to something. Recently, there has only been meaningless chatter. I was hoping that book 5 would could the story but now that I find out that there are two more books, I'm really starting to wonder if the author is catering to the hit tv show.

Wow. Arya's character arc is one of my favorites. I have gotten to where I anticipate her chapters the most. The next stage of her character development should be awesome.

Besides the Boltons and Freys there are no good or bad guys. Just people vying for the throne.
