I think that was always the plan. Something tells me they are taking a divergent road to Transformers where they are just a McGuffin to the human actors.
Godzilla and the Titans are the star of the franchise, not an action human protagonist
So there will be a lot of actors moving in and out.
Plus even within the movie it felt like the character was being set up for a one and done.

I thought it was a cringeworthy reach to have Tywin’s actor say ironically “Long live the king.” They might have been able to get away with the line but......not him.
