I didn't care for it at all. The problem is the whole time I'm watching the movie, I'm comparing it to the original.. On it's own, it's prob above average but it just feels so mediocre to the first movie.

This movie is freaking stupid as hell.
Also, people realize Rome had paved roads right? Like the whole city, it's all fricking paved roads. You see these beautiful works of architecture in the background, as they trod around in the sand.

Movie came to streaming on tuesday. Had the 1&2 bundle pre ordered and watched it tonight.
It was okay. Def not the worst in my library. Considering how good 1 is, couldn't expect much more. Pretty straight forward and not too much depth.

Just watched it. The ridiculous things have been discussed.
I’ll say this, to do the story they came up with justice, it would need to be twice as long, which of course is too long.
So it seemed rushed, and the ridiculous parts stood out more.

I rewatched the first on Sunday then saw the sequel on Monday. I enjoyed it start to finish but I’m not a movie critic.

Ridley Scott needs to retire

Just watched it last night. After the baboons, I tried to turn my brain off and just be entertained. It didn't work. Gladiator is my all time favorite movie with so many perfect scenes, none more powerful than the reveal in the coliseum of who Maximus really is. "Husband to a murdered wife, father to a murdered son and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.". That scene is unforgetful. Gladiator 2, as a whole, I'd rather not remember it was ever made.

Just watched it, I thought it was fine. I’m not sure why they went so over the top with the animals, I’m sure the CGI was expensive and the lack of realism took me out of the movie some. The baboons were ridiculous but I thought the sharks were worse. They would not have been able to transport sharks into the arena and also a shark wouldn’t immediately attack anyone who falls in the water, just dumb.
They tried to tell a really big story and ran out of time, it definitely felt rushed.
The most unrealistic part of the whole movie (which the first one suffers from too), is that people can talk in front of the arena or in front of whole armies and everyone can hear them perfectly
Overall if you don’t take it too seriously it’s a fine movie and enjoyable enough.

It wasn’t explicitly said but heavily implied.
When? After watching Gladiator II, I racked my brain trying to remember anything from the first that would even be a hint of Lucius being Maximus's son.

Because it wasn't. There is not a part in the movie where you once thought Maximus was his father. Only thing we knew was Max and Lucilla had a thing a long time before.

It was never insinuated but it wasn’t shocking to find out, especially the way it was revealed

This.
The age of Lucius in the first one compared to Maximus's son would almost sort of imply that Maximus cheated on his wife.with Lucilla. And that would tarnish the character a bit IMO. And yes I know that Lucius is a little older than his son, but still.
While I did like what they tried to do with the story (and Lucius being Maximus's son is a cool idea), that retcon affects the original movie in a bad way. Maximus comes off as this badass man who is fiercely loyal to his wife and son. And even the suggestion that he stepped out on her is a bad thing.
Also, this tripped me out:

The actor that played Emperor Geta also played metal head Eddie in Stranger Things.
I knew I recognized him from something, but couldn't place it and forgot to look it up.

Btw, to get back on track, this movie blows.

I’m in the camp that it is a fine stand alone action movie that you shouldn’t take seriously. As a sequel to Gladiator, it is bad

Watched it last week. Terrible. Felt more like a made for streaming movie than a theatrical release.

All roads lead to Rome.
At the peak of Rome's development, no fewer than 29 great military highways radiated from the capital, and the empire's 113 provinces were interconnected by 372 great roads. The whole comprised more than 400,000 kilometres (250,000 miles) of roads, of which over 80,500 kilometres (50,000 mi) were stone-paved.
I mean they had stone/paved roads from Turkey to the "Barbarians" in Britain and Germania.

85% of the "theatrical releases" I've ended up watching on streaming later are slowly pushing me out of theaters nearly completely. Some of it is bad CGI, some it is completely stupid writing (sharks in the Colosseum, etc.) I've tried to watch Gladiator II three times in the last week, and I keep getting bored and killing it before I finish it.

I always thought they did imply it. Even before this movie was a thing, I remember it being a hinted at as a possibility.

Can you explain why you thought that? The only thing we really see from what I remember is that they were once romantically involved, and she still sort of pined for him. But never once did anything lead to any hints about Maximus being Lucius's father, unless I am completely missing something.

I’m not sure I can! I just remember not being surprised when they went that route in the sequel because I thought it was put out there in the original.
I’ll have to rewatch the original now.
