Not sure you can call it fighting.

I had no interest in seeing this movie but I ended up going. What a waste of time. Pedro Pascal must have dirt on every producer in Hollywood. Geta and Caracalla were awful. I know the movie isn’t meant to be historically accurate, but their characters really bothered me. Washington’s character was ridiculous. A waste of an amazing actor.

After watching it all I could think was why, why did this have to be made.

But one benefit was it made me really appreciate the original even more. This seems to be a common theme with most of modernity.

I rewatched the first one Saturday. I hadn’t seen it in probably 15 years so it was like watching it again for the first time. My god they don’t make them like that anymore. It was way better than I remembered

That's one of the problems with this movie.
Do I think there were tigers in the coliseum? probably not, maybe, i don't know, but it's not unbelievable to think the Romans were able to get a tiger from western asia. And in the movie they had it chained up, not running wild like a fricking 2000lb rhino with a dude on top as if he's got control of this animal. This is earth, and earth animals in a movie based in reality, not Geonosis in Star Wars.
Somone joked about lasers on the sharks and it's not even that farfetched for this movie b/c that's how stupid that scene was that it wouldn't be out of charactor for them to have fricking laser beams on their fricking heads.

I just don't get what they were thinking with the outlandish animal scenes in this movie. They immediately made the movie silly and not serious anymore.
I know making sequels isn't easy, but they didn't even try to make a good movie here.

If you're watching this expecting it to be similar to Gladiator, it's a huge dissappointment.
If you're watching this expecting somethign similar to the Expendables or Fast and the Furious, you might enjoy the ridiculous action. I had said earlier it was more 300 than Gladiator, but 300 was 1000x's better than this crap.

I loved the first one but even that one is a rip off of 1964's The Fall of the Roman Empire.

Just watched it tonight and I liked it overall.

The story line where Lucius was Maximus’ son the entire time was lazy writing at best.

The incredibly quick rise to power that Denzel’s character had was also unbelievable.

The monkey CGI also sucked and was over the top

Everything else was good.

Did Maximus cheat on his wife from the first movie I guess?

No. I think Lucius was a few years older than his other son

Ah, that makes sense. He did look a few years older.

The thing is this is a movie using early Rome as its vehicle. It’s going to take liberties to entertain audiences.

It’s not supposed to be 100% accurate. It’s not telling the real life life story of a true person. I mean the 1st one had Lucius Verus, who was historical but he was Marcus Aurelius’s brother in real life. If you need it to be 100% historically accurate the you should have hated the 1st one as well.

As a popcorn movie that was made to entertain, I think it succeeded

I just think it’s odd that this movie goes so over the top with the “freedom” trope when one of the few things that Caracalla is recognized for was his massive expansion of citizenship for the empire

Wait what?

Naumachia

Not sure about the sharks, but the Romans did flood amphitheaters to stage famous naval battles.

No one is expecting it to be.
That doesn’t mean it should be full of unrealistic things should happen. It’s not some fantasy movie or a movie set on another planet.

Like . . . how did this make it into the movie. This cgi was just awful. And to happen so early in the movie. And then again with the sharks in the coliseum.

Ridley - just have them fight large men wearing animals heads again and everyone would be happy.

This was a true sequel. Worse than the original in almost every conceivable way, but passably entertaining if you just feel like going to the theater.

I finally got around to seeing this movie last night.

It was bad like most of y’all have said.

Particularly the two emperors which were comically awful and the horrible fight scenes.

Denzel was awful in this movie as well.

I would never watch this movie again and couldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Felt like watching a cartoon. Denzel reminded me of the sorcerer from the Disney movie Aladdin

Man that movie felt like Netflix made it. Just not even close to the first and felt for a made for tv release. The two most badass characters were the standard bearers behind Pedro on the ship in the opening scene with the masks and bear skins. I was hoping they were going to fight once they landed. Needed more badasses like Tigris of Gaul and less sharks and monkeys. Just so dumb.

Also Denzel turning the head around with the senate was so laughably bad. Ridley just completely mailed it in on this movie.
