re: George RR Martin has a message for people who don't think he will finish ASOIAF

that's a clichéd way of saying you don't say "frick you" to your fans/audience/customer...it's just not good practice, and all he did was make more people dislike him, more people concerned he won't finish, etc.
regardless, when I say "he seems like a huge cocksucker" it isn't me being entitled because I don't care if he finishes. It is my reasonable opinion based on a guy telling the people who buy and love his work. They didn't make him wealthy, but he wouldn't be without them, so "frick you" is a tad extreme

telling his fans "frick you"
He didn't say this to his fans, he said it to the people speculating on his death. Those that are doing this claim to be fans, but what type of fan sits around speculating on an author's death? "George RR Martin is not your bitch."
I find it funny when people claim that story tellers and artist "owe them something." Because last time I checked they've GIVEN "fans" time, thought, effort, imagination, and a world to explore that allows them to escape to places they would have never thought of. The only thing that "fans" give is a anywhere from $1.99 to $30 to read, watch, or listen to that artist's work. Those same "fans" become entitled when it doesn't come out the way they theorized, or expected.
Every time I see "fans" get pissy about an artist taking their time about getting something done, all I can think is: let's see you do any better if you think it's so easy. If they try to attempt something they find it's not easy.
"Fans" that get pissed about how long it takes George to turn in a 2000 page manuscript, I want to point out that it took TS Eliot a little over a year and help from his friend Ezra Pound to write a 64 page, 430 line poem called The Wasteland. George doesn't have that luxury of having a colleague who worked with just about every other literary name of his day sitting next to him pointing out where he needs to make changes.

That is such a dick move though. I want the show and the books to have the same ending, and for Martin to tell D&D a different ending than the one he wants to write and to be dishonest with them about the direction of the series is utter bullshite.
I disagree. I kind of want there to be two different endings. The show has strayed far away enough that I have already started considering it different universes.

If you think fans, especially ones who have been reading the series long before it became this popular, hasn't speculated whether he'll live to finish the series then I don't know what to tell you.
That doesn't make them any less of a fan either. It's a legitimate discussion when you consider other writers have died before series have been finished and it required other writers or mediums to finish it.

See Robert Jordan with Wheel of Time.
The real question is, would Martin leave notes and designate someone to finish his series? I kind of doubt it.

I believe that he has in his will, should he die, that if anyone tries to finish the books that they will be sued. That is kind of a dick move. But it's HIS story. Not the fans'

I understand what you're saying, and I hate to use you as an example, but I just so happens you responded.
You, like a hand full of other on this board, have always garnered my attention and have been part of my "favorite posters" list. I read y'all opinions and even though I may not always agree with what y'all say, I respect and enjoy it. Those opinions sometimes influence what I watch or read.
If I was to sit here and speculate on what would happen to people on here whose opinion I respect, that would be some fricked up shite.
Is okay to worry that the man doesn't look to be in a health state because of his weight? Of course we do it with our loved ones everyday. What's not okay is saying how and when that person will die. It's taking cynicism to a whole new morbid level. Something I feel no one on here truly wants to come off as.

I would be pissed if someone were to tell me, "Hey Fatass, you need to sit in your house everyday until you finish your book series, which I'll still bitch about upon completion because the story didn't end the way I wanted it to. That means no vacations and no free time. Oh and by the way, you better not die before completing ASOIAF, Fatass!"
And for everyone who's complaining about supporting his work, what about all the people I see sending pirated EPUBs of his novellas around on these message boards? As for his health, this vitriol that fans are spewing on the internet can't be good for his cardiovascular health.

More than kind of a dick move. That is a dick move.
At least Robert Jordan sat down with several people and told them how he wanted his story to end and made sure the story would be finished.
I don't know enough about Martin to like or dislike him but if his will actually states that then F him.
Yes he created a great story but people reading said stories put the dollars in his bank account and to go out like that would be a tremendous punk arse move.

I think HBO has permission to finish the story arc in the event he passes. Even then, do you really want to read some half-assed fan fiction or ghost-written book?

Do you ever think he has masturbated to his own characters? Like before the show was made?

I sort of understand both sides to this. While saying frick you wasn't the best decision, people talking about him being fat and dying is pretty messed up. That's what he's referring to.
OTOH he has to be the slowest writer ever. I'm not a reader, but I'm familiar of the release dates of each novel and there is no excuse for it to take that many years between novels. JK Rowling almost wrote the entire Harry Potter series in between two of his novels. He doesn't owe the fans, but he does have a responsibility to the work and the story. He could start by quit giving interviews like this and go back to work.

If HBO has permission to finish on their own, then the will comment is meaningless since the story will be finished.

But with his personality he could say on his death bed "The show ending isn't how the books would have ended" and it wouldn't surprise me.

It took Tolkien 12 years to write LOTR.
