I'm starting to think he's completed the series and is waiting to die and have it released posthumously

Someone in the Westworld thread had a funny idea: Westeros is just one the worlds in that story and everyone is a host. Explains "magic" and resurrections. Makes GRRM's master work an utter joke.

So as an author, his legacy will be that his laziness caused his magnum opus to have to be completed by other writers.

He's been very clear in the past that ASOIAF dies with him. He will not allow for it to be completed after he dies by someone else.

Someone can write it, it just won't be "official". How's Martin gonna stop them?

his estate can stop them - at least from selling it

Pizza Crawl schedule in the later half of 2018 is insane.

If the writer gives them a percentage, I'm betting his estate will be okay with it. Ole Georgie is probably always late with writing them birthday cards.

Well, if he dies with it unfinished and the TV series offers the only resolution to the storylines then won't the series be the de facto completion?

Fans who care enough about the books to give a shite about this will never accept the show's last four or five seasons as canon because of how far they have strayed form what has been published already. It will always be incomplete to them unless the actual characters and storylines in the books see resolution.

Is it possible he's written himself into a corner with the story and has no clue how to end

I’ve always thought this was a bullshite excuse. He really didn’t back himself into a corner as much as everyone likes to pretend, in fact he’s set up some really cool stuff, and in a world with dragons and magic he has plenty of deus ex machina choices available to him.

I don't even care anymore. It's been so long. I am not about to read them again to refresh my memory.

Question is, does the publisher have any rights or is it all owned by his estate? If the publisher owns at least a part of the IP can they do anything with it?

I think he wants to wait until HBO does their ending so he can see how fans react. Then he can adjust books based on if they liked or hated it.

He should write an alterior end that differs from the show if his motive is just to make as much money as possible at this point.

But frick him if he's just sitting on it to see how the show ends.

Frick him anyway

He knows how it ends, but has utterly written himself into a corner with regards to how to get there.

My interest will all but end with the tv show and any prequel/sequels.

you guys are so bitter that he hasnt finished that u just wanna trash on him more. he will finish the books, and when he does i'll be buying them.

whether its in 10 years or 1 year doesnt matter to me, they will provide the same enjoyment and take the same amount of time to read either way
