I would rewatch the first 4 seasons and leave it at that.

Game of Thrones is a perfect example of why I don't get invested in television shows. I thought this one would be different because it was a self-contained story with a beginning, middle, an end. I had thought the quality of the first four seasons might carry into future seasons after the show passed the books.

I was wrong.

The declining quality was evident from the get go, but I ignored it because it was Game of Thrones. The Sand Snake story line of Season 5 was forgotten after the awesomeness of such episodes as Hardhome. Season six, at least in my opinion, was a welcome return to form. The only misstep that season made was the introduction of Euron Greyjoy - a misstep that would go onto haunt the remainder of the series.

Season 7 was definitely rushed but I felt that it was still solid television all things considered. The first two episodes of season eight were pretty good. I ignored most of the criticism of those episodes on this board until the third episode of season eight. That is where the show officially jumped the shark for me. Episode four started out well enough, but then you had the back half of the episode that completely destroyed Jamie's character as well as began the destruction of Dany's character.

The destruction was officially complete when Dany decided to destroy King's Landing. That moment, when she started slaughtering innocents, is where the show officially died for me. Episode six was merely the autopsy whose cause of death has made me decide to never watch an episode of Game of Thrones again.

They really started diverging from the books after S4. 5 was absolute shite except for Hardhome. Same with 6 and the Bastard Bowl.
GRRM deserves most of the blame though. Book 7 was originally coming out in 2015.

Watched the whole series twice before season 8. Now rewatching old episodes just pisses me off because so many things are just pointless and have no payoff. It’s beyond frustrating how much they fricked it up

I can't stomach the thought of watching it through again. Like others have said, the ending ruins the story.

If there was a way to induce amnesia (and leave a warning- do NOT watch beyond this point! ), I could probably go through the battle of Winterfell, and the half episode that celebrates the win.

The sack of King's Landing is visually amazing, it shames a lot of movies. It would be neat to see that again, but damn sure set a timer to cut it off before the bells ring.

I sympathize with Kit Harington; remember that "making of" scene, where he reads the ending, and breaks down? I would have been that way too. Like, WTF is THIS??? Why are you destroying this show so thoroughly?
He was probably realizing that not only is the show itself trashed, but that he just went from budding superstar to yesterday's has-been. You can't bounce back from what they did.

I have still not rewatched season 8 at all

And have no interest in the show anymore.
I used to be obsessed.
It was a Rian Star Wars ruiner Johnson level shite stain onto a franchise.

Seasons 1-6 were great. I almost wish the show had ended with The Winds of Winter.

Season 8 only iced the shite cake that season 7 put in the oven. That little trip beyond the wall is when things really started to go south - those two seasons are united in the sense that it felt like a completely different show.

There were good moments, sure, and it was visually stunning at times. The only thing that can be universally hated, IMO, is their abandonment of the character development that had made the show great in the first place.

Almost every major character started doing shite that just didn't make any sense at all. It was aggravating for a show that had modeled itself around being so methodical and patient.

It's still one of my favorite shows ever, but it definitely peaked at the end of Season 6 and then fell off a very steep cliff in quality.

HBO has announced a prequel about the Targaryens:

LINK

I have a feeling a lot of people won't be tuning in due to season 8's failure.

To be honest I'm not really thrilled about any spin-off unless they do something with Arya's journey West...

this honestly sounds terrible

My favorite characters in the books are Jaime and Stannis Baratheon. D&D ruined both in the show.

That's cool. I liked Arya's character. Her solo journeys in GOT were among the most interesting stories for me. I would like to see more of her meeting new peoples and challenges with her skill set that she's learned in her adventures.

I haven’t even thought about GOT since Season 8 ended. It’s going to be a long time before I can forgive what they did to the show.

I will probably rewatch in a few years but it’ll never be the same.

Arya by a mile. Then probably Theon/Reek. Theon isnt my favorite character but his story line in book 5 gets really good. Arya has been my favorite from the get go.

i actually agree and really liked what they turned Arya into I just think her story is done at this point and any kind of West adventures would turn out horrible

The character arcs followed for years that fell to meaningless pieces make it now just unsavory.

This.

Some of the visuals in S8 are stunning though.

I already rewatched 1-8 and enjoyed all the seasons including 8 with no shame.

Theres nothing else on TV as good as game of thrones. Even the shittier seasons are better than 99.9% of the other trash on television.
