One other thing to consider is that they really have not been revealed anyone as a really master battlefield strategist. They have had some good ones - Robb, Tywin, supposedly Randyl Tarly, maybe Bronze Yohn Royce. But hopefully someone steps up as being really special.

I don't know. Robb was a pretty damn good strategist. I don't think he lost a battle to Tywin (except for the ones he intentionally sacrificed) until the Tyrells joined the Lannisters, and Robb was way too outnumbered at that point. But Robb was masterful at army strategy, and he was only 17 or so years old.

ETA: And Tyrion seems to be pretty good at it. He at least has studied military strategy, and has experience with the defense of King's Landing against Stannis' army. Although I wouldn't dub him a master strategist just yet.

I don't know if Brienne was satisfied or confused by their reaction. But, if she was going to take them out, I think she would have told them so right then. That's just how she is.
She's not stupid. Taking them out like that would be suicide, and might endanger Sansa.

But if/when Davos finds out about Shireen, he's going to lose his fricking mind.

Robb was definitely naturally gifted, he was straight owning the Lannisters for a while. I thought Tywin was a good but not great battlefield guy. (Tywin's specialty seemed to be politics).

I'm not sure where you got that point about the Tyrells being vulnerable to mobile forces. They live in a giant fricking plane and have some of the finest horses in Westeros from what I remember. That means they should have a big mobility advantage. I've always believed that Tyrell has a huge military force, but they are kept in check because they don't have a particularly defensive location. Dorne despises them and could come from the south. Then you have the super rich Lannisters (who make up for lack of manpower with shite piles of money) out west. The Crownlands to the North mean they would have a hell of a time bringing that farce to bear on anyone.

I was more talking about France in the 100 years war (if Highgarden is indeed supposed to be akin to France). A fairly small number of English longbowmen backed up by some knights beat the "flower of French nobility" a few times. Though in the long run France pretty much won in that they kept their sovereignty).

Probably took that analogy further than I wanted to. (Luckily I managed to avoid going into the Scotish/English wars and formations like schiltrons, etc.)

I fully recommend reading this hodor thread for a laugh this week, it's classic

Someone keeps trying to argue that Ned and Cerei conceived Jon snow got smacked down 50 times and keeps coming back with more retarded reasonings for it

Not that I thought she was going to take them out at Castle Black, but if they had attacked her for killing Stannis, she was going to attack them back (otherwise, I see no reason to approach with drawn sword). The way I took it - she gauged their reaction to see if there was going to be a problem. Neither objected to her action or reasoning, so that may be the end of it. I think she sewed the seed of discord on the Shireen thing, but that seems to be just a show vehicle - Brienne would have no way of knowing how close Davos and Shireen were. But, now we have a unresolved conflict on the show now that Davos knows something is up. I doubt he would care about the queen - but even in the books, Davos would kill for Shireen.

Understand that part I just done see any textual support for another army having a technology/training advantage like the English Longbow corps. Maybe the Lannisters' wealth allows them to keep more knights in the field?

Kujo - and I think he may be trolling. But that's like using PEDs in the special Olympics. I tried to put out the fire (pardon the pun), but it didn't help.

Are non-book readers who pay attention and have a clue welcome here? I had to pull the rip cord on the Hodor thread.

Can you imagine a discussion about army sizes being discussed in the Hodor thread?

Nah. He is the prince that was promised. And Dany is getting her own red woman next week. Or at least Tyrion is. They are setting up for the big showdown in the north

Two questions:

1) what happened to the original Dothraki who followed Danarys across the desert? Are they just SOL living in Mauren?

2) who is currently holding Moat Cailin? Are they going to let Littlefinger through with his army?

1. Yes, they are living in Mereen.

2. I think it's held by a Bolton army....

1) yes there is a small contingent of Dothraki in or around Meereen who followed Danny there

2) the Boltons/Freys. Not sure how LF would siege his way past. I think a naval convoy around to Whiteharbor makes more sense. Especially if Manderly is in on this.

There aren't a whole helluva lot of them left, IIRC. Attrition is a bitch.

It would be a small garrison of Boltons and perhaps some Freys. The bulk of the Bolton army is inside the walls of Winterfell.

Boltons. Not likely, but it's TV, so they might just have the Vale army arrive without explanation.
