Because Martin is a slow fricking writer and the fans have had twenty God damn years to pick apart and analyze a complex framework within which Martin, like any good writer, dropped hints about the secrets that are to be unfolded, and then the fans all got together on the internet and shared their ideas.

It is still one of the most unpredictable series, fantasy or otherwise, of all time.

Exactly. If anyone wants to be upset that we all figured out R&L=J, blame GRRM for not finishing the freaking books.

Did you actually read the books?
Yep. I get that Rhaegar was batshit and thought sleeping with Lyanna would "save the world" but that still doesn't excuse what they did.

So... No. You didn't read the books

Nowhere in the books does it say or imply Rhaegar was crazy.

He left his wife for another woman.
He had plans to overthrow his father.
He believed in a prophecy that he thought referred to him, then realized it didn't, just someone in his FATHER'S line.

So Jon may be AA...but so could Daenerys.

Class dismissed.

I wonder why D&D didn't give him his eye patch? Seems like an easy costume prop to use.

I think the Mad King roasting Ned's dad and/or brother (can't remember exactly how that went down) alive in their own armor may have had a bit to do with the rebellion.

Rheagar and Lyanna running off together was problematical for sure. But I don't think the Starks and the Aryns would have gone to war without the Mad King's bullshite. And I'm not sure Robert would have gone to war without them.

One of those things where it would have been so easy to stay true to the books that D&D just said frick it for no reason at all

It was funny seeing my hodor friends have no clue who Damphair and Euron were.

Are we getting Victarion and Euron? Or will Euron take the place of both?

The war was declared when Aerys demanded Ned and Robert report to the Red Keep. Ned, Robert, Aryn and Tully raised banners in revolt.

R+L was just the catalyst.

Yeah but this is a world where genetics and prophecies are treated as truths used for structure and guidance.

Rhaegar knew about the disaster at Summerhall...saw what a crazy belief in prophecy will do, by his own family.

Believing and acting on are two different things.

Your Ph D is redacted.

Exactly. R & L were pieces of shite who shouldn't be celebrated

True love is celebrated throughout all cultures throughout all time. It is also shown to be dangerous.

And I could easily make the argument that the biggest piece of shite was Robert Baratheon for starting a war over a woman, particularly given your reasoning. Or the Mad King for sleeping with/ possibly raping his Hand's wife resulting in Tyrion and the death of Tyrion's mother. Basically added tinder to the tinder box as there was clearly no love lost between the Lannisters and the Targaryens come the rebellion. Without that little dalliance by the Mad King, perhaps the most powerful faction in Westeros remains loyal to the king and the rebellion dies before it begins.
