. What makes GoT so great is its combination of both spectacle and the story/characters involved in it. The Wall is probably in most people's bottom two story lines...you really only care about Jon and Sam, the rest of the Watch and Wildlings are faceless red...err black shirt

people watch because of human characters.....not because of dragons, smoke babies, giants, waargs, white walkers, etc, etc, etc

blackwater had none of that. king's landing has none of that. Rob Stark had none of that. Hound and Arya have none of that. Jamie and Brienne have none of that. Tyrion and Tywin have none of that....etc,etc,etc

This shite is why people hate LOST after loving it the first few seasons.

Most of what happened at Castle Black was a human story - a desperate struggle between 2, primarily human, armies.

No, LOSTs problem was they tried to throw so much shite in the plot without an ending in sight. This show knows exactly where it will go and how to direct the plot towards that.

start: Introduce Walkers, make filler characters
middle: Introduce Dragons, kill filler characters
ending...walkers vs dragons

After a second watch, I've really turned around on this episode. It's far from perfect, it doesn't have the usual story built-in, but to just sit back and watch a fantasy battle, it's pretty awesome. As an episode Blackwater is better, but the battle is better at the Wall.

I still wish Ygritte's death had a little more oomph to it. I know some had issue with Jon holding her as she died with the battle going on around them, but the battle is ending. When they pan up, the Watch has clearly won. Jic anyone cares.

How did no one die in the elevator as it went up and down about four times...700'...powered by a ten year old?

Because Castle Black is where they live, sleep, eat, store their food, drinking water, etc. If they just stayed up on the top of the wall - the force from south of the wall would just open up the gate for Mance and they'd starve them out.

Is Castle Black not on the other side of the wall and if not, why?

Thanks. That explanation makes sense to me, especially since I now recall that the raiding party hit several places which were south of the wall before heading to the castle. For some reason, I had forgotten that they were an advance force and that they had climbed the wall at another place while Jon Snow was with them.

Great ep - awesome battle. Liked the Ygritte/JS tie off. Staying in the cave was their only chance.

9/10.

it's like Metallica Enter Sandman or Tupac California Love.....like it's a money grab versus art.

After thinking on this episode a bit more, I have to say - it was kind of disappointing for an Ep 9. I mean, the plot wasn't really moved forward drastically as it usually is with these. A few minor characters died, Sam becomes a man, and Jon Snow assumes head watchman of the wall and then promptly abandons the position on what appears to be a foolish suicide mission. We didn't learn a bit about anyone not on the wall. Sure, it sucked to lose Ygritte, but that's cause Rose Leslie is a hottie with a body. Not because I particularly cared for her character.

Maybe GRRM is flippin' the script on us and plans to give us a true season finale. I'll be kinda disappointed with the end of this season if that isn't the case. The first 3/4 kicked arse tho.

Yep, it definitely looks promising. I guess they did change it up and use Ep. 9 as a "teaser" to get you more worked up about 10 after everything that happened in 8.

It's probably pretty obvious but apparently this was the most expensive episode ever and that's mostly because they had to CGI the frick out of the wall

So for anyone wondering why we didn't see the Giant fight, you can blame the world for not already having a 700 feet tall wall for them to shoot on to save cost
