Oberyn was one of the few people in the show who had some semblance of morality and humanity left, and with motives that we can relate to. It would have almost been easier to bear if he had been cleaved in half on the first swing. His style was so entertaining and effective against a man that no one else in the world could challenge that it makes you want his victory even more.
For him to be killed so viciously after he had essentially won the fight just feels like some sort of betrayal. Especially for a character that showed absolutely no fear since his first appearance; to watch such a heroic figure who was always cool, never rattled and always in control scream in agony like that was profoundly disturbing. It was terrifically horrifying.

I 100% agree. And although I love GoT, I don't consider myself that much of a fan of the show yet. Especially compared to all the diehards.
However, there was something agonizing about this particular moment in a show full of them, but I can't place my finger on it. This disturbed the hell out of me. I haven't stopped thinking about it in three hours. When I watched it again it was even worse.
I'm not sure why I'm feeling this way. It could be the gore and how graphic it was. I think it's deeper than that though. I think it had something to do with the revenge for his sister and The Mountain admitting it as he destroyed his face. Something about that rubs me the wrong way. And he was so close to winning! He had him!
I felt the same way for awhile after how Jaime killed Jory in S1 (and it wasn't even that gory).

We should have seen it coming. This show is too smart to have Tyrion walk out of legal trouble by winning a champion fight twice.

I've also pegged the feeling I have. This is the polar opposite of how I felt during the Chris Davis return against Bama.

True, but they always do a good job of making sure we don't see it coming. That's what makes this show great.

Real talk: I'm one Tyrion-death away from #TeamWhitewalker

Haven't y'all learned anything from the Red Wedding?
Actually, I am learning that George is predictable. I think it's such a ridiculous way out at this point. He's killing off all the good characters and tonight was cheap IMO. At this point, Tyrion is scheduled to die. Arya/Hound and Jon Snow are the only characters left that I like if Tyrion does die.
Hopefully the last 2 episodes redeem this horseshite

Agree on Arya/Hound, but Jon Snow has become boring because of Castle Black. I like Brienne and Pod too though.
Dragon lady has become lame since she won't get naked anymore.....and why they don't show her dragons all the damn time is beyond me.

Yeah, Brienne is cool. Snow sort of replaces Rob Stark and he'll have some cool battles ahead I imagine. At some point he'll be the leader at the Wall it seems.
Eta: and yes, frick Dany. She sucks. I only want to see the dragons.

The show must've ran put out of CGI money. We've gotten like one shot of the dragon all season

But I think I just watch shows differently than a lot of you guys, apparently. The moment it was over I just went back to watching the LSU game and gave it no thought again, and i'll just be ready for episode 9 in a week.

i agree with this for the most part, but i have a hard time seeing oberyn as a "hero" in the traditional sense. he was a good dude, but he never seemed like a main character/protagonist. it sucked that he died, but in a way it restored my faith in the show, because i was beginning to think that the 'good guys' were going to win every encounter. now i have no idea who is safe.
what a way to go... that was incredible.
and i have no idea what sansa's game is, here, unless she truly understands that little finger is a serious player and she's finally willing to "play the game" in her own self-interest. (because he's pretty much the only person she can ally with at this point). i can't really blame her, but i doubt she really understands who/what she's allying with.

If it were like most every other show, you would know with 100% certainty that Tyrion is going to live. Even when Oberyn died shockingly, you probably wouldn't sweat it much as you'd know Tyrion would somehow figure a way out.
Even though I'm very confident Tyrion will figure a way out, this is about the only show where I really just don't know, I thought the exact same thing about Ned Stark 3 seasons ago.

I was all about the Khaleesi from day 1...or from the 1st nude scene, most likely. She's still badass, but there needs to be some kind of big movement from her storyline. We've been wandering around conquering cities/freeing slaves/building the Khaleesi army for, what, 2+ seasons now? Let's let those dragons do work already!
