I don't think there's any way they would. Too much of a fan favorite. You never know with GoT, though.
The problem is this is a show based off a novel series. Novel writers don't have studio or network execs in their ear when they write. They don't have to worry about firing the actors by killing their characters when they write. In a normal TV show there is no way in hell Tyrion would die. But this is one guy who writes his novels. Killing a character in a novel is a lot different than doing it on TV. It doesn't cause near the firestorm it does on TV.
If Tyrion dies people are going to be reallllly pissed off though.

I was yelling at my TV while he was pacing around
Also, reading through the thread, I figured out why his nickname was important. They even foreshadowed it immediately before the fight when he was "preparing" his spears. To that extent, I don't think anything regarding the Mountain's fate has necessarily been spoiled.

Killing Tyrion would be disappointing on two fronts: First, that he would be the most popular character to die yet and two, it wouldnt be shocking or even the least bit surprising.
At least when Ned and Rob died it was surprising, but killing off a major character when everyone already knows its happening weeks in advance doesnt provide any compensatory thrill. It just sucks.

Yeah, I and all the other hodors I watched with came to the same conclusion about the Mountain's fate.

I'm still super fricked up about this.

You know this episode had a crazy ending when almost no one is talking about the amazing naked chick at the beginning.

I definitely don't want it to happen nor do I think it should happen, but Tyrion's death would still be a major shock to me. I will be stunned if he actually does die. I really don't think it's going to happen, but I'm continuously wrong with this show so who knows.

Holy frick. It's like watching a horror movie.

I know it's just a fantasy. I know some contrarian frick is going to chime in with some snide remark telling me to chill. Whatever.
That was the heaviest moment I've ever experienced watching a television show. Honestly I don't think I have I've ever felt that way watching a movie. This show has a way of affecting me more deeply than I could have thought possible. I guess it's because it's antithetical to the most tradtional motifs of justice and revenge that are tiresome and cliche, yet fulfilling in some subliminal way.
As viewers/readers we become accustomed to this feeling, and feel like we are "owed" the fair and righteous outcome. Martin not only starves us of this, he completely destroys the notion of fairness in the most devastating ways. It's a very powerful method of storytelling.

I'll say it... I closed my eyes. Had to rewind but it was a bit easier the second time around.

Pretty much how I felt the first time I watched "Seven". The long buildup toward the inevitable dispensation of justice only to to have the ideas of right and wrong completely flipped upside down.

I 100% agree. And although I love GoT, I don't consider myself that much of a fan of the show yet. Especially compared to all the diehards.
However, there was something agonizing about this particular moment in a show full of them, but I can't place my finger on it. This disturbed the hell out of me. I haven't stopped thinking about it in three hours. When I watched it again it was even worse.
I'm not sure why I'm feeling this way. It could be the gore and how graphic it was. I think it's deeper than that though. I think it had something to do with the revenge for his sister and The Mountain admitting it as he destroyed his face. Something about that rubs me the wrong way. And he was so close to winning! He had him!

quote:I felt the same way. For me, I felt a little embarrassed for Oberyn Martell. He was always such a confident, somewhat arrogant character. He just seemed like he had everything under control. And in an instant, he was not only killed, but his head was squashed to jelly. On top of that, he's fighting for everyone's favorite character, Tyrion. The whole thing was almost unbearable. I had to turn away a couple of times.
And he was so close to winning! He had him!
